It’s finally official! Prince Harry and American actor Meghan Markle have announced their engagement through a royal announcement. Although we’ll still have to wait for the wedding bells,  here’s everything we know about the royal engagement so far and what we’re looking forward to!

The Royal wedding

The lovebirds posed for a series of adorable photographs.

Although the exact date is yet to be announced, the royal wedding will take place in Spring 2018. Harry told reporters he knew Meghan was “the one” from “the very first time we met.” He did not elaborate on his proposal to Meghan, but when asked whether it was romantic, he smiled and said, “of course it was.”

Residence

Kensington Palace.

Once wedded, the couple will live at Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace (where Prince William and Kate Middleton reside), and Harry currently lives.

The Controversy

Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII.

The American actor who is best known for her role of Rachel Zane in Suits will be the first American to marry a British royal since the controversial marriage of Wallis Simpson to King Edward VIII. The union was so controversial that King Edward VIII was forced to give up the throne in December 1936 to go through with his wedding.

Furthermore, while Wallis’ marriage to King Edward VIII was her third, this will be Meghan’s second marriage. The actor was previously married to Hollywood producer, Trever Engelson.

The Bling

Meghan flashed her engagement ring to reporters.

Meghan flashed her ring to the reporters present in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace. The ring designed by Harry has a gold band and features a large diamond from Botswana and two smaller outer diamonds from the personal collection of Harry’s late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.

The large diamond from Botswana holds significance as the couple has spent time together in Botswana over the past year.
