When scouting the black carpet at PFDC L’oreal Paris Bridal Week, the last person I expected to run into was Mooroo. The worlds of music and fashion don’t normally collide in Pakistan, especially for men. The Pakistani men of music usually don’t give too much attention to their appearance (case in point: Ali Noor who shows up to every show wearing jeans and a t-shirt with his dishevelled hair.) Even though Mooroo might not be up to speed with the latest trends or wearing the biggest fashion designers, he has developed a personal style that has become evident through the years: Geeky chic. Mooroo loves his cuffed sleeves and tweed jackets.

Therefore, naturally, I wondered what Mooroo was up to. “I’m hosting the black carpet, man!” said an excited Mooroo who was equally surprised/glad to see me there.

MoorooSo of course my first question to him was this: how did this union happen? “I have a very good working relationship with L’Oreal and Garnier,” says Mooroo, which is why they gave him a call and asked him to try his hand at hosting. Mooroo’s Facebook feed is inundated with Garnier videos where he has worked with some very famous names, such as Ainy Jaffri and Aamna Sheikh. That’s when I’m reminded that Mooroo’s area of expertise isn’t simply music, it’s comedy as well. He has worked with internet star Faiza Saleem, as well as Mira Sethi, on creating random funny videos that usually get thousands of views and likes.

I asked Mooroo if that was his hook for the rest of the night: was he going to use comedy while hosting the black carpet? “They told me to be myself, how I am. So I’m just winging it. Although putting on a suit and a bow tie makes me a little bit more sophisticated than I usually am. I have to control my cursing and bad language.”

Unfortunately, Mooroo’s first PLBW hosting experience didn’t go as well as one would have hoped, simply because the people he met didn’t make things interesting for him. “The thing with this fashion world is that people aren’t genuine. Everyone came to the show with such rehearsed and scripted answers that talking to them was boring.” I reminded him that this was an on record conversation, to which he replied “Haan haan, likh do!” unabashed honesty is another one of his strong traits.

Eventually somebody came to drag Mooroo back to the black carpet to resume his duties, to which he sarcastically added “I’ve got to run back to talk to some more ‘interesting’ people.”
