There’s absolutely no alternative to the power of a black-and-white ensemble, and the mellow fall season is the best time to understand that. The monochromatic combination is a timeless pairing that can be done even with the smallest of wardrobe choices, and that’s why we think its classy aura should amplify your go-to looks this season.

What should you be doing to the make the most of it this season? We have the style lowdown…

Stick to basics

We all have tried and tested the waters of this common combo: a black shirt with a white bottom — be it a skirt, trousers, jeans or even a gharara in recent times, and you know it’d work!  You can never go wrong with it, but keep in mind that always opt for a heavier top as the deep hue will downplay the design while white in the lower half will balance it. You can also go for one bold accessory such as a beaded necklace or a popping clutch to nail this look.

Play with proportions

This technique stirs up the colour scheme a little and makes it more visually appealing. Amuse yourself with a variety of cuts and shapes. You can try long back, and short front hemline, or a peplum. A floor length long shirt with a high waist belt and slit with a sleek skinny trouser can also serve to break the norm.

Add Texture

Sometimes solid black and white can look bland, and it needs an oomph factor. Spice up your muted look by adding some texture to the dress. You can use different fabric treatments such as pleats or ruffles or embellishments (sequins or embroidery). Keep the style you are aiming for in mind and don’t go overboard with these trappings. In contemporary fashion, designers do go wild and mix up two completely opposite textures to make a dress show-stealer.

Layers are welcome

There is no need to shy away from mixing black and white prints with solids. The effortless hues are ideal for layers – colour blocking or blazers – you name it. Just make sure that when you deal with prints, the scale of a pattern should complement your body frame (smaller prints for petite frames and larger ones for larger frames). When it comes to two-toned outfits, the mantra is the bolder, the better.

Break the rules

Always remember that while the mishmash is a classic, fashion is supposed to be fun! So experiment with it and make it more playful. You can pair different styles or fabrics such as denim with silk or add a pop of colour somewhere. Whatever makes the number more attractive will make it a sure shot hit.
