2018 has been a happening year in television with some brilliant performances by veterans like Faysal Quraishi and Nauman Ejaz. However, last year also gave brilliant opportunities to relatively fresh faces such as Iqra Aziz, Imran Ashraf and Mohsin Abbas Haider who established themselves as terrific actors.

Stepping into 2019, we are looking forward to more entertainment and hopefully less depressing storylines. While the new year will bring us new pairings, there will also be a handful of our favourite jori appearances (take a hint). So far, it appears, it’s all been covered: Pre-Partition saga? Check. Ensemble casts? Why not! Content-driven stories? Ready to roll. Drama and romance? You got it.

Here is a list of 9 new television plays that will hook you on this year.

Aangan

Pakistani dramas

With three episodes already aired, the pre-partition saga – directed by Ehteshamuddin – is literally giving us no chance but to hook on to our TV screens as it is not going to be available on YouTube. Boasting of an ensemble cast comprising Ahsan Khan, Sonya Hussyn, Mawra Hocane, Sajal Aly, Ahad Raza Mir, Hira Mani, Shahroz Sabzwari and who’s who of the fraternity along with industry veterans, Aangan is high on emotional quotient.

Cheekh

Pakistani dramas

Starring Saba Qamar and Bilal Abbas Khan in the lead, Cheekh seems to be a gripping story which talks about women empowerment. With Saba Qamar as the protagonist, we are excited to see a range of emotions. Also, Bilal Abbas Khan will be playing a villain for the first time on screen. Directed by Badar Mehmood, Cheekh will go on air on 5th January, every Saturday at 8pm on ARY Digital.

Dil Kya Karay

Pakistani dramas

Fans of Feroze Khan will rejoice in 2019 as the actor will be seen in Mehreen Jabbar’s next – Dil Kya Karey – opposite Yumna Zaidi. It is a romantic drama and we’re excited to see a fresh pair on television. Feroze’s character – Armaan – is completely different from his earlier portrayals on-screen. Armaan is a selfless guy who wants to do good to everyone and wants to make everyone happy. Now that’s a surprise after Mir Hadi.

Alif

Pakistani dramas

This is one project we’ve been hearing about for almost a year now. We will see Hamza Ali Abbasi paired up with Sajal Aly in this much-anticipated play which features a lot of bigwigs of the industry including Ahsan Khan, Osman Khalid Butt, Manzar Sehbai, Kubra Khan, Sadaf Kanwal and many more. Written by Umera Ahmed and directed by Haseeb Hasan, Alif is touted to be a story we have not seen before.

Surkh Chandni

Pakistani dramas

With Surkh Chandni, Sohai Ali Abro will be back on our television screens. The play is based on the life of an acid attack survivor (played by Sohai), and Osman Khalid Butt is playing the main lead opposite her. The actress had to go through serious transformations for the role and we expect the drama to be an eye-opener.

Meray Paas Tum Ho

Pakistani dramas

Talking about another fresh pairing in a romantic setting, next we have Ayeza Khan and Humayun Saeed. The two will be seen in upcoming serial Meray Paas Tum Ho which is directed by Nadeem Baig. The play intends to give a relief from issue-based stories covered on television. Penned by Khalil ur Rehman Qamar, we are looking forward to see two of our beloved actors in different avatars.

Anaa

Pakistani dramas

We recently got to see Hania Aamir and Shehzad Sheikh teaming up in the teaser of upcoming play Anaa where Hania is playing a jovial character which suits her personality and Shehzad is a calm and composed guy. From the looks of it, the drama seems to be a romantic story with fun moments to provide adequate comic relief. Shot in the northern areas of Pakistan, the drama is yet to receive a confirmed release date.

Honorable mentions

Sajal Aly and Ahad Raza Mir

Pakistani dramas

One of the most beloved pairs of current times, Sajal and Ahad are all set to recreate their magic in an upcoming Farhat Ishtiaq play.  The two stars also hinted about the play in their New Year’s post on Instagram with a picture of them against a scenic backdrop. “2019 has something crazy in store for you,” Ahad wrote.

Sana Javed and Imran Abbas

Pakistani dramas

Sana Javed is also working on a project that deals with workplace harassment. Directed by Anjum Shehzad, the drama has Imran Abbas playing the negative male lead opposite her and is a story of an educated girl who is the breadwinner of her family and she is harassed at her workplace.
