Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide and also the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women. Unfortunately, Pakistan has the highest rate of breast cancer cases in Asia, and majority of these incidences are a result of late diagnoses due to lack of awareness or cultural taboos. Lending support to Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital’s (SKMCH) breast cancer awareness campaign, notable superstars like Mahira Khan, Sanam Saeed and Maya Ali have stepped up and become faces of the drive in order to enlighten women about the disease through social media platforms as well.

As part of the venture, actress Mahira Khan recently took to Twitter and played a quiz about breast cancer knowledge, where she scored 11 out of 15. She shared her surprise on how she expected to know all about the disease. “I got 11/15 and I thought I knew all I could about breast cancer!” she wrote.

Soon after, a Twitter user responded with a highly personal and hateful remark; depicting the very face of our society’s indifference. However, Mahira chose to remain calm and gave him the prefect reply.

“It’s because of people like you women don’t even bother saying the word ‘breast’ let alone go for an examination. Why don’t you take the quiz, to be more aware for the women in your family and yourself (men can also get breast cancer),” she replied.
