With the beginning of December, Netflix is ready to release new original content for the festive season, ranging from Christmas films to action-packed series. The latest addition to the streaming platform include an American thriller — Messiah — which has already created hype with its trailer.

The series shows that the world is turned upside down by the sudden appearance of an enigmatic young man in Syria whose vibe is akin to that of Jesus Christ. Like Jesus, the mystery man (played by Mehdi Dehbi) claims that he was sent to the earth on a special mission from his father. Known only as al-Masih, he is also gifted with the ability to perform miracles, attracting the attention and fierce dedication of everyone he encounters on his journey.

Messiah

According to the series’ official description of YouTube, a CIA officer will investigate this charismatic figure. The question remains is he a divine entity or a dangerous con artist?

Twitter is divided about the series’ subject; people are referring the character as a portrayal of Dajjal. Al-Masih ad-Dajjal is an evil figure in Islamic theology. He is said to have come from a number of different locations, but generally from the East, usually between Syria and Iran, comparable to Christian understanding of the appearance of the Antichrist in Christian eschatology.

The first season will consist of ten episodes, which will be released on Netflix on January 1, 2020. You can watch the first trailer of Messiah here and decide.
