It’s not just a figment of our wishful thinking; a Game of Thrones prequel centered around House Targaryen is apparently nearing a pilot order at HBO!

According to reports by Hollywood publication, Deadline, Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin and co-creator/executive producer of Colony, Ryan Condal, have been working on the show. It is set about 300 years before the events of the original series, tracking the beginning of the end for the mighty House Targaryen; the mother of dragons, Daenerys Targaryen was a protege of this same house, of course!

It is being said that the show has been in the works at HBO since last fall, and was created by Martin and Condal, and written by Condal. It is interesting to note that Martin has been dropping some hints on his personal blog; “Two other shows remain in the script stage, but are edging closer. What are they about? I cannot say. But maybe some of you should pick up a copy of Fire & Blood and come up with your own theories,” he wrote back in May.

Fire & Blood is essentially a Targaryen history book, and goes back to a time when House Targaryen first came to Westeros and took residence on Dragonstone. The only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria, the Targaryens were considered the most powerful family in Westeros once they landed.

“We have had five different Game of Thrones successor shows in development at HBO, and three of them are still moving forward nicely,” said Martin in a post in May, and one of these three, starring Naomi Watts has already shot a pilot this summer.
