Hadiqa Kiani is no doubtedly one of the strongest female vocalists we have in Pakistan. From ‘Boohay Barian’ to ‘Hona Tha Pyaar’ from film Bol, she has given us great hits. With her latest album Wajd we are hearing some much needed soulful music from the artist and while the previous two songs have been hits having crossed a million views, ‘Aaj Rung Hai’ might just be our favourite yet. Plus, the fact that the song involves a highly talented team behind each aspect of it of course helps.

The renowned qawwali itself has been written by Hazrat Amir Khusro, which of course leaves no space for doubt about the beautiful composition and poetry. Singing a qawwali that has previously been sung by legends like Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and more recently in Coke Studio by Amjad Sabri and Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, is no easy task but Kiani definitely holds her own. The song also features maestro Ustad Dildar Hussain on the tabla, who played the the same instrument for all of Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s qawwalis; that really takes things up ten folds.

The video for the song has been directed by none other than Abdullah Harris and is set in the midst of a traditional mehdni/mayun sort of setting; it has a great happy feel to it. The pop of bright colours the assortment of flowers bring in look lovely and the constant drizzle of flower petals in almost each frame paints a beautiful picture. Hadiqa herself is also in the video, as she usually is, but the main focus is on the beautiful couple Hania Amir and Hasnain Lehri, who are both reaching great heights with their work these days. The couple gives a great ‘hero and heroine’ feel to the video, and the fact that both are extremely endearing obviously helps! The cinematography is commendable with some great eye-catching shots, especially the aerial shots where the backup dancers and Hadiqa herself, are whirling in circles; the choreography is highly reminiscent of the whirling dervishes associated with the sufi culture. ‘Aaj Rung Hai’ has left us wanting to hear more from the artist and we can’t wait for her next song to release.
