After giving a powerful performance in Udaari, Ahsan Khan had taken a break from TV. While he wasn’t completely missing from the spotlight, fans did miss him on the small screen. The actor will now be back with not one, but three dramas this year; Aangan, Alif and Maryam Parera.

“It’s a simple story and the key character, Maryam Parera is a Pakistani Christian,” Ahsan told Something Haute in an exclusive chat. While the serial may not be as star-studded or as big as his other ventures, this drama holds a special place in his heart. He feels it focuses on a neglected issue that needs to be talked about more.

The drama is going to air on PTV and TV ONE. “The reason why I’m glad it’s going to air on PTV is because we need to educate our masses through entertainment. I’m thankful to the new authorities of PTV who have agreed to run this play on two channels at the same time.”

The actor, who is also known for his social work, added that it’s important to send across a message of equality. “Maryam Parera tackles its Christian characters with a lot of love, respect and intellect. Religious minorities are often treated as second-class citizens by the majority in Pakistan and so they have to face discrimination, abuse and inequality,” he said.

Ahsan further said that Islamic law does not encourage such prejudice. “I have an especially soft corner for Pakistani Christians since they too played a very important role in the creation of Pakistan and so they are just as Pakistani as you or I.”
