It’s refreshing to see celebrities break the facade of their glamorous celebrity persona by sharing incidents that we all can relate to. For instance, when the likes of Deepika Padukone talk about their struggle with depression, it’s very liberating for people to know that somebody as successful as Deepika has been through a very real and relatable problem. Or when Sonam Kapoor wrote an essay on her body image issues and how she struggles to maintain her Bollywood persona.

We all need to read Sonam Kapoor’s essay on body positivity

Akshay Kumar has just done something similar by opening up about a traumatic childhood experience which many people in Pakistan, and perhaps the world over can relate to.

Speaking at an international conference on human trafficking, Akshay shared that he had been molested as a child. “Let me share my own experience with you all here. When I was a very young kid, a lift-man once touched me inappropriately,” he revealed. However, Akshay encouraged people to speak to their parents if they ever experience something like this.

“Since I had good communication with my parents, I told them about this incident,” he said. Thankfully, the same person was caught in another case later and was found to be a habitual offender, according to Akshay. “Parents and children must have a free interaction so that such offenders are identified immediately,” the actor reiterated.

It’s shocking how many people go through this at a young age and tragically, there’s very little dialogue around the issue. Most children are ashamed or scared to reveal to their parent, and maybe Kumar’s assertion for the need of discourse on the topic would lead to a more accepting society.
