With the exception of a few great films like Hindi Medium, Mom, and Bradrinath ki Dulhania, it has been a comparatively disappointing year for Bollywood films so far. Supposedly big films like Jagga Jasoos and Tubelight bombed at the box office to everyone’s surprise, despite having Salman Khan and Ranbir Kapoor to their credit.

In recent interviews, Bollywood stars Akshay Kumar and Anushka Sharma gave their two pence on the situation. Actor/producer Anushka Sharma made an important point as she stated that big stars and flashy songs will not be enough to make a movie a hit.

“It shows us that people cannot be taken for granted and they are looking for something new and they are looking for a good story and if they get a good story they will watch it no matter what. They won’t just watch it because it has a huge star in it or has good songs. This is not happening and it is a good thing,” Sharma stated.

Meanwhile, Akshay Kumar commented on film promotions and how they are consuming a high budget, “Maybe it has got to do with our content which is not right. Also, they are very systematic in the South. They don’t spend more than Rs 2 crore on publicity…” The growing trend of film promotions has been an interesting aspect locally as well, with the hype of films being far more than the actual content.

Both actors have films releasing this month, and while Anushka Sharma and Shah Rukh Khan starrer Jab Harry met Sejal, is a grand production, Akshay Kumar’s Toilet Ek Prem Katha is a relatively small budget film.
