World-renowned singer Atif Aslam has been winning hearts left, right and center with his soulful vocals. Now, he is back with a long overdue single titled 12 Bajay.

These days, Atif is usually featured as a playback singer for Bollywood movies so, this is indeed a pleasant farewell gift for 2018 for all his fans. His last single Humein Pyar Hai Pakistan Se was released in 2015 which was a Defence Day celebratory song.

In a BTS video of his latest song, which premiered live on YouTube, the singer is heard talking about his vision behind the single and recording at the Sunset Sound Studios, Los Angeles. “It was an honour to record at the studio. When we got there tou pata chala ke 200 se zyada Grammy award winners ne wahan record kiya hai. Aik musician ke liye khwaab hota hai aise jagah pe perform karna, record karna.”

He added that he wanted to create the kind of music he was passionate about. “Main kaafe arsay se is cheez ko soch raha tha ke haan, I should make the kind of music that I want to play. Jab maine isko record kiya tha tou mujhe apne Aadat wale din yaad agae thay.”

This new single is unlike the romantic singer’s quintessential outwardly persona. It is a rock song, with heavy drum beats and electric guitar strums. When you will listen to it first, you will feel uncomfortable because this is certainly not what you expect from a singer who has sung love ballads like Dil Diyan Gallan and Tere Sang Yaara but, it is surely something he claims to enjoy.

The visuals of the video are a mix of archival footage of fans chanting ‘Atif’, his power-packed performances at arenas, accentuated with pop art and psychedelic illustrations. While the song is uneasy at first, it is likely to grow after you listen to it for a few times.

We listened to Aadat after listening to 12 Bajay and we understand why Atif felt the new song took him back to the Aadat days. His first song which had undertones of rock, strong drum beats and an uncanny music video are visible in this new release, too. If you don’t believe us, check it out yourself.

And let us know if you think Atif should do more of such music:
