We had high expectations from this song. It’s from a highly anticipated film, features two of Pakistan’s hottest stars, has Atif Aslam in it – in the words of Javed Sheikh, “This is a lethal combination!” The song, ‘Dil Ye Dancer Hogaya’, was recently unveiled to the press and media at a launch show attended by Javed Sheikh sahab and Aijaz Aslam, who came out to support the film.

Hosted by Ahmed Ali Butt, the launch was a star-studded affair, with Fahad Mustafa and Mehwish Hayat taking the stage which was designed like a courtroom. Also present were Nabeel Qureshi and Fizza Ali Meerza, as well as Shani Arshad, who is the music director of this film. But the one person who captivated everyone and absolutely stole the show was of course Atif Aslam.

Unsurprisingly, Atif has that effect in the song as well and we wonder if that bothered the stars of the movie. Because it’s just not possible to notice Fahad Mustafa dancing with a Cindrella-esque Mehwish Hayat, neither of whom look good, if Atif is performing in the same space. He exudes this cool and relaxed charm in real life, on stage, and now in this video as well.

Ahmed Ali Butt was quick to point out that Atif doesn’t do too many songs locally, so what made him agree to doing a song for this film? “Om Puri was in town and I really wanted to meet him. There I ran into Fizza, who approached me for Actor in Law. Right there and then I said I’ll do it.” So Atif’s decision was based on his whim, because he had not heard the lyrics or the melody of the song.

The lyrics are an interesting part of this song because they are a little unusual. At one point, Atif sings “Teray dil ke channel ka Michael Jackson hogaya” and that works when Atif Aslam sings it.

But is that song applaudable in general? While the melody is sweet and slow, and the lyrics are also memorable, if not very well written, the song itself isn’t that amazing. At best we would say that it’s an average song. That said, Atif Aslam makes it work. He looks great in the video and thanks to him the song is stuck in our heads now.
