HSY’s finale: when the show gets bigger than the collection

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rp0B3U7L4a8&feature=youtu.be] A fifteen minute delay (or was it thirty minutes?) led to the HSY finale and I have to admit, it was grand. Half a dozen bronzed and muscled torsos carried in regal, white silk flags boasting the HSY monogram and they followed a very haute Fayeza Ansari clad in a white hot-pant jumpsuit. The show began with white and ended with gold. Predictably, the entire collection was all white and gold, enhanced further by Asmaa Mumtaz's styling. It was grand but was it the strongest collection shown at PSFD Sunsilk Fashion Week? No. Just as critics at the Fashion Pakistan Week complained that Nomi Ansari (and not Honey Waqar) deserved the grand finale, similarly those who had been blown over by...

FPW3 Day Two

It's very flattering how my friends and followers have been asking why I'm not promptly uploading my thoughts on FPW3 but really, this back to back fashion marathon is exhausting and between this, a family wedding and filling forms for China and Hong Kong visas I'm going crazy. As for FW, I'm trying to reserve all thoughts for my official reviews. Anyhoo, a little must to be said. Sana Hashwani, dressed in Cavalli, was Best Dressed on Day 2. Seen here with her gorgeous daughter Zuvair. Hani Taha, dressed in a Shehla Chatoor jumpsuit, put up strong competition but it would have seemed rigged had I nominated her for Best Dressed! [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pd8O-EpLEKY&feature=youtu.be] The venue was certainly...

Fashion Pakistan Week 3 day one

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nz1z51hgcy8&feature=youtu.be] - I quite felt the buzz on the first day of FPW3. Despite the heat and the long walk to the venue, there was fashion in the air and style in most of the runway shows. In brief: - It was great meeting so many bloggers and twitterers that one encounters in cyberspace but hardly gets to meet. - Depilex's terrible Hair & Makeup at the recently held Showcase made one appreciate Sab's Hair & Make up at FPW3. She really has come a long way and did a great job of creating slick, clean looks for models. - As Karma works with Asmaa Mumtaz, Sanam Chaudhri worked with Ayaz Khan, Rana and Maha Burney for the styling of her show. Ideally each...

Spanish designer Agatha Ruiz de la Prada at Showcase 2012

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gi7QvRcpbs4&feature=youtu.be] Spanish designer Agatha Ruiz de la Prada's collection at the Sky Showcae 2012 was vivid, vibrant and visually very very impressive. These kitschy kind of clothes may not be everyone's cup of tea - certainly not amongst conservative and sophisticated Pakistan's fashion-goers - but it taught a lesson or two in what a collection needs to come together as.  The clothes, jelly bags, shades and florescent shoes, as well as the bright cuboid pony-tail holders were perfectly coordinated. A fun show to watch, it would have been better if it had been available to buyers, accessories et al....

Fashion Hunger Games begin: may the odds be in your favour!

There's something Maheen Khan said when I met her two weeks ago: "I love fashion weeks because that's a time when we designers stop thinking about sales and start thinking about concept. It channels us towards creativity." When we were one: Rizwan Beyg will be kick starting his own SHOWCASE (today), which will undoubtedly be well planned and impressive given his obsession with perfectionism whereas Maheen Khan will be reviving Fashion Pakistan Week next week. As they say in The Hunger Games: May the odds be forever in your favour! Maheen will be showing her classic Maheen line as well as her high street label Gulabo at Fashion Pakistan Week 3 (FPW3), one of the many fashion weeks/showcases...

SOC’s ‘I’m every woman!’ style statement for the Oscars

Oscar moment! Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy with Daniel Junge. Her Bunto Kazmi kameez is beautiful and you can get a peek at the flag dangling from her wrist! Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy’s sartorial choices were as successful as her Oscar-winning documentary. Very similar to her acceptance speech, her wardrobe was confident while retaining the pureness of being a sophisticated and contemporary Pakistani woman. She chose her designers (all women) intelligently: Sania Maskatiya for a young and progressive feel, Sana Safinaz for an essence of fusion with the world’s aesthetic ethos and Bunto Kazmi for the richness of hand-embroidered Pakistani couture. Her jewelry was just as much a statement as her clothes. The gold cuff she wore to the ceremony -...

IFW, Oscars, LPNY and Humsafar

Islamabad Fashion Week has been postponed to April 10, 2012 which means that between FPW3 (April 6-9), IFW (April 10-13) and PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week (April 13-16) April will be a month to conserve energy for. Add the Sky Fashion Showcase to that list (March 26-29) and you'll be exhausted already. What a feeling! Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy's Vanity Fair party outfit by Sana Safinaz was accessorized by a lovely (ruby and diamond) ring and bracelet designed especially for the occasion by Sherezad Rahimtoola. SOC was also presented a pair of diamond earrings to go with the bracelet but she couldn't wear them as the earrings she had worn earlier (by Kiran Aman) were quite heavy and she couldn't...

Sania Maskatiya: the beginning of a great brand

Sohai, Sania Maskatiya, Maheen Karim and Umair Tabani Sania Maskatiya recently celebrated the first anniversary of her shop and it was amazing to see women buying clothes as if they were doing their monthly groceries. All credit goes to this young firebrand who not only has her head wrapped around the commerce of fashion but knows how to balance it with the edginess it takes to be called a designer. Smart designers will make sure the press covers their work, leaving their social activities for exclusives Sania with powerhouse Frieha Altaf.
