PFDC & Sunsilk Fashion Week: Day One

In true cricket spirit, here I am reporting fashion week live from Lahore. We are here at the Expo Centre Stadium for the first day of the test match where the Pakistan Fashion Design Council is expected to bowl eight overs with a line up of Nickie Nina, Beekay, Zaheer Abbas, Yahsir Waheed, Sahar Atif, Muse, Mohsin, Fahad Hussayn and Sublime. The weather conditions are bright and the pitch looks good as it’s been jacked up a couple of feet. Fashion week’s beeches are packed with Lahore’s socialite spectators and a few fashion enthusiasts from Karachi who are here to cheer for their team. There we see Rizwan Beyg here in the VIP enclosure for Adnan Pardesy and Zaheer Abbas....

Strife after fashion week

What happens when fashion weeks’ red carpets are rolled up and bright lights turned out? The idea behind any fashion week in the world is trade but retail reality is not so ideal for designers in Pakistan Almost six months after an event in Karachi, the PFDC & Sunsilk Fashion Week is wheeling its way back to Lahore. Pakistan Fashion Design Council, one of the country’s two main fashion councils, made a commitment to hosting fashion week alternately in Karachi and Lahore. And as the event approaches, Lahore’s fashionable elite is airing out its designer wardrobes and getting that final shot of Botox for extra measures. It is essential to look flawless on the red carpet and there’s so much focus on...

Hilary Alexander, value addition to the upcoming fashion week

As far as memory serves me, fashion commentator Hilary Alexander was first scheduled to come to Pakistan for the original Pakistan Fashion Week, planned and panned back in 2007. PFW, a Jang Group project for which IMG was roped in, never materialized but the Pakistan Fashion Design Council (one of the country's TWO fashion councils) has managed to invite her for their event next week. Alexander will no doubt bring extensive experience and value to PFDC's table. Hopefully they’ll be listening to it all. Hilary Alexander won the British Fashion Journalist of the Year award in 1998, then again in 2003. This year the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) will be conferring the Eugenia Shepphard award for media to her....

Why are there two fashion weeks, anyway

(Published Sunday, 03 Jan, 2010) ‘It’s simply because there are two fashion councils led by ego, as opposed to logic.’ Pakistan is perhaps the only country in the world that has two fashion councils. Many countries have several fashion weeks, but only one fashion council. The United States of America has the Council of Fashion Designers of America, the United Kingdom has the British Fashion Council and nearer to home, India has the Fashion Design Council of India. Fashion Councils are usually non-profit organisations, working towards the growth of the industry and fashion weeks are part of the resulting growth curve. Pakistan’s two fashion councils can be seen as two influential cartels: the Pakistan Fashion Design Council (PFDC or Lahore Council) under their...

A fashion week for Lahore

(Dawn Feb 2010) Though not the first, it has to be said that the PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week was the most organized Pakistan has seen so far. The graceful Iman Ahmad of Body Focus takes a bow at the debut PFDC & Sunsilk Fashion Week in Lahore. She has not shown since.   As a trade event, the fashion week held in Lahore last week had its vital statistics in place: there were buyers in the front rows and a hustle bustle of media all over the place. The four-days scheduled 32 collections – some great and some atrocious – with the sole purpose of generating business and building a professional profile for Pakistan’s fashion industry, something only fashion weeks...

Look forward to Adnan Pardesy at fashion week

The PFDC & Sunsilk Fashion Week kicks off next week and this time on, while ace designer and fashion week's biggest success story Kamiar Rokni, will not be showing many talented designers from Karachi will be making their Lahore runway debut. Adnan Pardesy is one of them. His will certainly be a show to look forward to. "It was high time I showed in Lahore since I have been stocking there for quite some time now and my production is well in control. I have been very impressed with the professionalism of components like Lotus and felt it would be a good experience," Pardesy spoke to me from his workshop late Saturday night. He was celebrating the success of the Pakistani...

First look: Sana Safinaz lawn

Love at first sight! Love or lust, you can rest assure that this year's collection of Sana Safinaz prints is going to be wiped out just as frantically as ever before. Yes, the Expo is a vaster and more secure venue to host the exhibition, but I can easily predict that women will be queueing up outside in anticipation. Just fifteen prints, ladies and you have an exclusive sneak peak into one of them. Image courtesy Safinaz, photographed by Guddu Shani...

Here today, ‘lawn’ tomorrow!

I haven’t been to a single lawn exhibition (yet) despite my inbox being flooded with launch invites. I really did want to visit Yahsir Waheed’s but couldn’t because I was traveling and missed the dates. However, anything that excites masses of women in this country merits attention and lawn certainly does…you do know that there are 28 high profile varieties of lawn coming out this season. Here’s a list of the ones that come to my mind…  Gul Ahmed, Nishat, Firdous, Junaid Jamshed, Yahsir Waheed, Asim Jofa, Vaneeza, HSY, Faiza Samee, Shamaeel, Nomi Ansari, Deepak Perwani, Umar Sayeed, Nadia Hussain, Maria B, Bonanza and last but definitely never least, Sana Safinaz. The billboards are up and for all of you waiting for information on the SS range, here’s a sneak peak into what they’ll be offering. The visuals will...

Sania Maskatiya opens flagship store in Karachi

It's been a long time since I saw so many blow dries in the confines of one singular space. In lay man terms, it's been a long time since I've seen so many Louboutins, Chanel bags, blow dries and fineries (LV shawls) dripping from women clamouring to get their hands on fashion. Yes, we're fast approaching the lawn season and nothing gets Pakistani women going more than lawn, but to true fashion lovers there is rarely a sight more pleasurable than pret a porter flying off the racks. And boy, was it flying! The mad rush at the launch. Indus Valley graduate Sania Maskatiya, who stepped into fashion with her label Chamak a couple of years ago and then...
