It’s election time in Pakistan!

And we’re looking at popular activist Jibran Nasir, who rose to fame with his ideological speeches on Pakistan and whose recent stance on the much frowned upon VIP culture got everyone talking. Jibran will be contesting the elections as an Independent Candidate from NA 247, an extremely hotly-contested constituency in Karachi District South-II. Jibran may not have the funds to launch extensive campaigns on television (as do the PML-N, PPP and PTI) but he recently released his campaign anthem titled ‘Hum Mein Se Aik’ and he obviously has the support of numerous influential stars and celebrities. Directed by A-list director Jami and sung by Arieb Azhar and Natasha Beyg, the video is an interesting mix of notable faces coming together in a monochromatic set up.

The premise of the video features some incidents in the recent past that tarnished the image of our country, after which is was termed as ‘unsafe’ world over. The wording of the anthem are thought provoking and invoke a sense of responsibility among common citizens who are in dire need to witness the change they have forever been waiting for.

The beat of the anthem initially reminds us of ‘Waka Waka’ – a 2010 Fifa anthem sung by Shakira but soon picks up pace with its meaningful lyrics and poignant tune.

Seen in the video are popular figures like gender rights activist Mahnaz Rahman and Kami Sid, icons like Bushra Ansari, Sheema Kirmani and Sarmad Khoosat, and young talent like Adnan Malik, Osman Khalid Butt, Anoushey Ashraf, Mansha Pasha and Mira Sethi.

Unlike other political anthems, this one doesn’t sing praises of Jibran Nasir but rather highlights the common issues faced by every citizen living in this country. The impact of the video is such that the lyrics echo long after you’ve heard the track. That alone makes it a winner for us, giving us all a sense of entitlement we need to feel for our country.

Sarcasm and witty puns are my best friends (also my worst enemies). I love turning my world around on its axis and soon the most ordinary events turn into the craziest stories.
