Titled ‘Mauj‘, the fifth episode of the coveted show, Coke Studio 11 has managed to break the mediocrity of the season with its powerful fusions this week.

Featuring returning artistes such as Aima Baig, Sahir Ali Bagga, Ali Azmat and The Sketches, the episode also features the organic earthy voices of Mangal, Darehan, and Shayan from the rugged lands of Balochistan.

What went right this episode? We have the lowdown…

‘Malang’

After the two gave us ‘Baazi’ last season, Aima Baig and Sahir Ali Bagga have managed to weave the same magic with ‘Malang’ this episode, and boy, what magic it truly is! Fusing a few lines of Chan Kitthan with the Seraiki track, this modern adaptation of a folk classic proves that diverse musical elements and zesty groove can make for an interesting festive mix.

‘Dastaan-e-Moomal Rano’

The Sketches seldom disappoint, and this time once again, the Sindhi band has proven that there’s pure charisma in their style of music. Singing the words of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai from his ever-popular Kalaam of Moomal Rano, this ‘Dastan’ is surely a delight for anyone who yearns for their lover. While the vocals are full of depth, the sound of Narr and the chanting beats of Kartal capture the true essence of Sindhi folk music.

‘Dil Hai Pakistani’

Featuring Mangal, Darehan, and Shayan – who were last seen in Coke Studio‘s off-shoot production, CS Explorer, the track features the earthy almost hypnotic vocals of the trio along with Ali Azmat, who adds in the oomph factor to the song. Spreading the rhythmic beat of Dambora along with Ali Azmat’s vocals, the new song is reminiscent of nostalgic tracks in regards to the repetition techniques it uses. However, is it as strong as the other two tracks this episode? We don’t think so.
