Abbas Jafri, best known for his modelling days and the two Lux Style Awards he won for being the most prominent face in the fashion industry, has just been given a ticket to contest in the upcoming general elections. He will be contesting on a PTI ticket, the former model told Something Haute.

Jafri will be running from PS 125, which is a predominantly MQM area in Karachi. It’s one of the most populated areas of the city, with a documented population of over 400,000 people. It’s also the MQM 9-zero area. Did we just mention that already?

But wait, let’s give you a throw back of Jafri’s days as a model…

Since retiring from the fashion industry, Abbas J has been busy with social work and philanthropy. He’s also Secretary Culture for the Pakistan Tehreek e Insaaf.  I asked his what he planned to do for the city if he won.

“First of all I do not have a political background,” Abbas replied. “I was given a ticket by PTI because of my background in social work. So irrespective of whether I win or not, I will continue doing social work. It is a win-win situation for me and my people. I was born and raised in Karachi. I live in this metropolis. I get to experience the sufferings of the middle and lower class on a daily basis. I can see the high rate of street crime. Hence I have decided that I will focus on eliminating that as a priority. Peace of mind is a basic right of every citizen of Karachi. Do we have it? NO!”

Did he plan to stay associated with the fashion industry?

“I feel I am a representative of the fashion industry,” he said. “The fashion industry brings a positive image of Pakistan internationally. I plan to make positive changes so that more international designers will come forward to bring their work to Pakistan. We also need more fashion councils. Our textile industry deserves a much needed chance to grow. This will generate a lot of revenue for Karachi and Pakistan.”

Lastly, why PTI?

“Why not PTI? All other parties have had more than their fair chance. Have they delivered? NO! PTI is the change Karachi needs and while representing my constituency PS 125 I plan to bring about the change they are waiting to see.”
