I’m having an off-phase for fashion these days; I guess summer vacations are around the bend and the mind has started wandering already. However, it is kind of fixated on television series, especially the dark and disturbing kind. And if I (previously) thought Game of Thrones was too grey and graphic then Hannibal (my new obsession these days) makes GoT look like Gossip Girl. Not really, but you know what I mean.

Mads Mikkelsen is the invasive cannibal psychiatrist.

Mads Mikkelsen is the invasive cannibal psychiatrist.

So what is it about Hannibal Lecter, the cannibalistic psychiatrist, that is so riveting? I’m not up to speed on all the episodes but I already know that it’s his charming mannerism, his insight and perception and his extraordinarily astute perceptive skills that make him above average. And therefore above average attractive. That he kills and eats people is surprisingly not repulsive. Yet. And again, I have to say I’m just two episodes into the series.

Hannibal Lecter is your genius anti-hero but the series itself is confusing me. Where in the world do these kind of crimes take place? We see and read about acid attackers, chopped up bodies and infanticide all the time (and that’s horrific enough) but where do serial killers grow mushrooms on living body tissue, gruesomely keeping victims alive? And has any serial killer in the world ever mounted naked, dead women on antler’s horns? It’s grossing me out and is beyond my average comprehension and yet, like an average bystander who can’t look away from a car accident, I’m hooked to it.

The only conclusion I can come to is that intelligence, even the evil genius type, is more attractive than stupidity. And attraction to Hannibal Lecter is – pardon the pun – quite fatal.

Now who do you think would be able to play the role of Hannibal Lecter in Pakistan? Fawad Khan, I feel, would have the persona but maybe not the acting chops…pardon the pun again.
