The highly anticipated 2019 Cricket World Cup anthem by Junoon has finally been released and it’s everything we were promised! Choolay Aasman is the latest release from the legendary band that has been churning out hits for the country since the early ’90s.

With the Cricket World Cup right around the corner, it is only fitting that an anthem was released just in time to pump up the nation as well as the team, and Choolay Aasman does just that. With a catchy, energetic beat coupled with Ali Azmat’s powerhouse vocals, the song is sure to get you grooving and in the mood to touch the sky.

Junoon, in a video posted to their social media handles, had promised a song for all the diverse people of Pakistan, and the video for the song made sure to deliver.

From the southern coast to the northern valleys, the refreshingly inclusive video features people from all over Pakistan. Produced in collaboration with Peek Freans Sooper, Choolay Aasman is sure to evoke a sense of national pride, making you want to don your green cricket jersey and walk around with green and white stripes on your face.

The visuals complement the transcending audio; as the song tugs at your heartstrings with its strong vocals and music, the video entices goose bumps, showing the diversity of Pakistan. Just as a Hindu girl is seen putting her teeka and face paint on, getting ready to support the national team, another girl in a hijab is seen completing her face paint, gearing up for the same.

The video preaches acceptance, tolerance and inclusivity, featuring minorities and marginalized communities. We see a group of transgenders gathered around a TV set, watching a cricket match, as well as mute children sitting around their instructor, who uses sign language to communicate the match highlights. We also see a Sikh tying a turban in the colors of the Pakistani flag. Not just that, there’s also a Christian man kissing the cross around his neck, just as a group of Muslim kids huddle around with their hands raised in prayer for the team.

With the World Cup fever peaking as the matches get closer, the message is sure to be well received. It’s an essential message to propagate in today’s trying times, and the effort put in for the song is commendable.

Kudos to Junoon for preaching an important message and for doing it so beautifully!
