Rani, a short film starring transgender model and activist Kami Sid, has been chosen as a finalist at the world-renowned NBCUniversal Short Film Festival, to be screened at a red carpet event in Los Angeles on October 24th.

The film narrates the tale of a Pakistani transgender woman who sets out to take care of an abandoned baby. Shot on the streets of Karachi, Pakistan the film has been produced by GrayScale and Rizvilia Productions.

 

 

“I’m feeling so positive and amazed that this film has been selected out of 3500 films,” shared Kami in an exclusive chat with Something Haute. “Only 15 films will be playing at the red carpet event in LA and hopefully, I will be going to attend the event from Pakistan,” however, added that she’s still waiting for some other logistic things.

As for her hopes attached to Naya Pakistan, she said she’s not expecting much. “Expectations usually ruin things and it’s too early to say anything. Governments come and governments go.”

Despite that, Kami added, “I believe Naya Pakistan will take a positive step for the betterment of the minorities as well as the transgender community.”

Impressed by India’s new laws to promote peace and equality, she said, “I hope they take inspiration from India where so much positive change has been brought.”

Rani was previously selected from over 3,500 films as one of fifteen Semi-Finalists and is now one of six Finalists at this prestigious festival.

Directed by Hammad Rizvi, and produced by Akbar Allana and Sara Siddiqi, the film has previously screened at Rhode Island International Film Festival, CAAMFEST and is also the winner of the Fox Inclusion Short Award at Outfest Los Angeles.
