Kami Sid’s ‘Rani’ will have its Pakistan premiere in March


Last year has brought many international accolades home at the film front with short films like Rani bagging several trophies. The Kami Sid starrer won a European award at the International Queer Film Festival in Germany as well as the Outstanding Writer Award at the prestigious NBC Universal Short Film Festival in Los Angeles. Now the film is all set to make its debut at its home ground with a premiere on 3rd March at the 10th Karachi Literature Festival.

In a press release issued by the producers of Rani, GrayScale CEO Akbar Allana shared, “Rani will be premiering on the 3rd March at the 10th Karachi Literature Festival and after this we plan to hold multiple screenings in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad at various universities, cultural centers and perhaps other festivals too.”

Pakistani film Rani has just won the Outstanding Writer Award at the prestigious NBCUniversal Short Film Festival, in Los Angeles. In attendance at the star studded event were Director Hammad Rizvi and Lead Actress Kami Sid – who was dressed exclusively in a dress designed by Deepak and Fahad. Rani is a unique story about a transgender Pakistani woman who sets out to take care of an abandoned child. Written and directed by Hammad Rizvi, the film stars Kami Sid, Maaz Khan and Hina Pathani. It has been produced by Akbar Allana and Sara Siddiqi. The film has previously won the Fox Inclusion Award at Outfest LA, and has screened at numerous festivals including Newport Beach Film Festival, Rhode Island International Film Festival, New York Asian American Film Festival, Seattle Tasveer, and many more. After filming, the lead actress Kami Sid became Pakistan's first trans model. She is an equal rights leader and ambassador for the region's LGBTQ community. Hammad Rizvi is a Pakistani-American writer and director, currently working in Los Angeles. Having lived in various parts of the world, his films often tackle topics that are as diverse as they are raw. Hammad holds an MFA from UT-Austin and is working towards his first feature film. “The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Kami Sid, the writer and director of the film, Hammad Rizvi. I will also be a part of the session which will later be open for questions from the audience,” he added.

Rani is a short film about a socially outcast transgender who sets out to take care of an abandoned child.
