The Matrix is returning with its fourth chapter, and Keanu Reeves will be seen reprising his widely-acclaimed role as the hacker, Neo.

The sci-fi franchise first hit the big screen back in 1999, and Lana Wachowski, who wrote, directed and produced the first three Matrix movies with her sister, Lilly Wachowski, confirmed the return of the hugely popular and successful franchise, saying “I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

Toby Emmerich, the chairman of Warner Bros Pictures Group, announced the new film on Tuesday, saying that the studio could not be more excited about the return of the movie; the first three installments in the franchise earned more than $1.6bn at the global box office.

The original Matrix, when released in 1999, made quite the waves, setting a new standard for turn of the century cinema with its post-modern take on the sci-fi genre. The movie followed Neo as he grapples with his discovery of humanity being trapped in a virtual reality – the Matrix.

The film is expected to begin production at the start of 2020, however no further details have been released yet.
