Chemistry is a dangerous subject.

Dilip Kumar and Madhubala in Taraana; DeepikaPadukone and Ranvir Singh in Ram Leela.  Clarke Gable and Vivien Leigh in Gone With the Wind. Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman and countless onscreen couples that set the screen on fire. Chemistry is what makes or breaks a romance, a relationship and as we’ve seen all along, a film or TV series. The chemistry between Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan, I believe, is what made Humsafar such a mammoth success.

This new Lux ad is no film but if it were a science lab it would come with a warning because the chemistry between these two is explosive. They return to the screen, several years after Humsafar and a year after their first Lux campaign together, to rekindle the fire and it is kind of hot.

Chemistry is also a very strange subject because people who have seen Fawad and Mahira together, hosting the Lux Style Awards for example, will certify that the sizzle goes out with a fizzle in real life. The two are good friends and enjoy an easy understanding but there’s no racing pulse. Shah Rukh Khan says that he has chemistry with Kajol because of their friendship; in Fawad and Mahira’s case it is a sincere friendship and simply onscreen magic.

So how was Fawad’s experience of working with Mahira, years after Humsafar?

“Terrible!” Fawad joked in a tongue in cheek manner when he spoke to us in this brief exclusive. “As always working with Mahira is a treat; purani dosti hai,” he continued. “Incidentally this is our second campaign for Lux. So behtar hoti jaa rahi hai (she is improving with time, he kidded)…she’s performing better and better every day. She’s a good, good co-actor to work with and an amazing person,” he added, sincerely.

Fawad may have been horsing around in the interview but he wasn’t wrong or kidding when he talks about improvement. You can easily detect an elevated sense of sophistication; both Fawad and Mahira – basking in the glory of cine success – are more poised and as a result, more self-confident than they were in Humsafar or even last year’s Lux campaign. It shows in their body language and the ease with which they handle sensuality in the ad. Fawad’s sexy, intense gaze and Mahira’s sultry wanton expressions are mesmerizing. And it always helps to have silk and bondage for added sensuality!

Fawad wrapped up the shoot’s charm very simply.

“It’s always a pleasure working with people whom you have camaraderie with,” he smiled“It’s just the time you spend together and the memories you take home.”

We hope that a film director from Pakistan will pick up on this camaraderie and chemistry and cast two of Pakistan’s biggest stars in a film together!
