Mahiya Ve Mahiya

A wedding song or a shadi number, as well call it, is quite a popular trend in every Pakistani family entertainer. Nadeem Baig’s upcoming film London Nahi Jaunga could not have passed the trend as the film revolves around the shadi of its male protagonist, Chaudhry Jameel, played by Humayun Saeed.

Brides, their cousins and friends should gear up as London Nahi Jaunga has given us the wedding anthem of the season in Meesha Shafi and Shani Arshad’s powerful vocals. Mahiya Ve Mahiya is a groovy Punjabi number featuring Kubra Khan and Mehar Bano with the right amount of sass, spin, latkas and jhatkas.

The song is based on Punjabi folk Boliyan which is a part of traditional Punjabi wedding culture. The tune isn’t loud but its rhythmic structure is like a dialogue from the bride’s side. As Kubra dances to the tune, you will involuntarily start tapping your feat or clapping your hands to the catchy beat. This kind of storytelling in the form of a song is addictive and refreshing as a shadi number.

The video of Mahiya Ve Mahiya looks as grand as any big Punjabi wedding, with extravagant and colourful setups, lots of backup dancers, laughter, dance moves with Patiala shalwars, parandas and jewels. However, there is a solemn confession of a sad lover hidden in the middle of this wholesome song. Kubra is seen in a radiant fuchsia pink and gold number as she tries to lure Humayun Saaed, her Mahi in the film.

However, the song sounds somewhat familiar and reminds us about Ballay Ballay by Shazia Manzoor. The song was featured in the Ayegy Baraat series which is also a Nadeem Baig’s directorial.

Starring Humayun Saeed, Kubra Khan and Mehwish Hayat, London Nahi Jaunga is a film about love, loss, family tragedies and broken promises. It is all set to release on Eid ul Azha.
