Putting years of speculation to rest, the official title of Bilal Lashari’s upcoming film has been announced. Maula Jatt 2, as we have been referring to it, is in fact officially titled The Legend of Maula Jatt. According to a recent press release, TLMJ is “Pakistan’s most elaborate and expensive film” made to date.

Directed by Bilal Lashari, the film boasts a stellar cast including Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan, Hamza Ali Abbasi and Humaima Malick in key roles. Nasir Adib, who introduced the original character of Maula Jatt in 1975 with Vehshi Jatt, has been roped in to write the dialogues for this 2019 reboot.

With Ammara Hikmat & Asad J Khan as the Executive Producers, this cinematic Epic has been produced by Ammara Hikmat, Bilal Lashari & Ali Murtaza of Encylomedia, Lashari Films & AAA Motion Pictures respectively, according to the press release.

The film is expected to release at Eid ul Fitr next year.

The Legend of Maula Jatt is exciting for many reasons. One, it’s Fawad Khan’s return to the big screen in Pakistan since Khuda Kay Liye in 2007; no, we’re not counting the cameos. Second, it’s the first time Pakistan’s favourite onscreen couple, Fawad and Mahira, will appear on big screen together, as a couple. Hamza Ali Abbasi will adapt to the role of Noori Nath and Humaima Malick will definitely kick ass as Daro.

An official Twitter account for The Legend of Maula Jatt was also created last night. Mahira Khan was one of the first cast members to comment on it, demanding a teaser be released! We second that.

So, will The Legend of Maula Jatt be the biggest film of 2019?

“I’m just glad that people don’t have to call it Maula Jatt 2 anymore,” Bilal Lashari spoke to us. “This film is not a remake or a sequel. It is a new story and a reinvention of the Punjabi gandasa cult genre.”

We can’t wait!
