Apart from Fawad Khan, the Pakistani side of the Subcontinent’s film industry was represented by one of Pakistan’s top leading lady, Mehwish Hayat at the relaunch of Filmfare Magazine (Middle East) in Dubai.

Giving some much-needed touch of Pakistani glamour to the event, the Punjab Nahi Jaungi actress held her own in part of the cross-border diplomacy that was underway at the event in Dubai. However, what made her appearance even more important was the honour she was bestowed yesterday night.

The event, which was held in Bollywood Parks Dubai last night saw the actress honoured with the title of Cinematic Icon Pakistan.

“It’s an honour to have been invited here,” Mehwish said amidst applause. “The revival of Pakistani cinema is very much in its infancy, but I’m very proud to have achieved what we have in such a short period of time. I’m sure that one day we’ll be able to hold our own and compete with the best in the world.”

The actress also gestured the need for more cross-border collaborations.

“It’s a shame that for this, we need neutral venues,” Mehwish said. “I would love for Indian friends to come visit us in my homeland and see the love people have. I think too much emphasis has been put on the role for artistes and films in building bridges between our two nations. No matter what the people may want, the past year’s events have shown that 70 years of history and deep political issues will always get in the way. I long for the day when people in India can freely see my movies in their country, just as Indian films are played in my country.”

Our correspondent Sadiq Saleem was at the event and before Mehwish’s acceptance speech, he first caught up with her on the red carpet.
