The Met Ball is our absolute favourite night in fashion. From the time when the theme is being decided to the Snapchats about getting ready and the final outfits and beauty looks, we wait for this night religiously. It’s the Academy Awards for fashion, if you may. This year’s theme celebrated the genius that is Rei Kawakubo, the founder and designer of Commes des Garçons translated – ‘like some boys’ – and the 2017 Met Gala was named “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between.” While most celebrities went avant-garde with their outfit choices, which not only looked very interesting, and stayed on-point with the theme, we couldn’t help but notice that some of them looked like ensembles you’d find on desi red carpets or fashion weeks. While they didn’t look like fashion disasters at the Met Gala (especially keeping the theme in mind) they did remind one of certain fashion disasters on our runways and red carpets.

Here are some of the looks.

Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen in their boho lace looks, Maggie Gyllenhaal in a floral dress pant, a long (something like) kameez and Hailey Baldwin in a crop top and layered shirt almost ghaghra choli-like all wore outfits that were fit to be seen at the Bridal Couture Week or even a wedding.

Bee Shaffer in an almost banarsi print, Haley Bennett in an embroidery on lace and Zendaya in floral/bird print definitely reminded us of something that we may have seen at an awards show in Lahore, where everyone looked as if they were dressed for a mehndi. Gota and gowns? Kawakubo would not be pleased! Zendaya’s prints featuring the parrots took us back to lawn prints just when we thought the season was over!

Keeping the jokes aside, the four celebrities that were absolutely wow and stayed so true to the theme that they looked like they were on Kawakubo’s runway were Cara Delevingne in a Chanel suit, Pharrell and his wife Helen Lasichanh and Rihanna all in Kawakubo’s designs. Dressed completely ready to slay the red carpet, these four really brought the theme ‘Art of the In-Between’ to life. Cara won the night, if you ask us!
