Indian actor Naseeruddin Shah recently found himself in the eye of the storm after his comments about mob violence in India led to a controversy. Post his thoughts that he is concerned about his children’s safety, many started calling him a ‘traitor’ and he was asked not to attend the Ajmer Literature Festival as well.

Referring to Naseer’s comments, Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday said that he will show the Narendra Modi government how to treat minorities.

“We will show the Modi government how to treat minorities… Even in India, people are saying that minorities are not being treated as equal citizens. What he [Shah] is saying today is all that Quaid-e-Azam had said [during India’s partition]. He left the Congress and founded Muslim League for the same reasons as he realised that the Hindus’ vision for an independent country will not have equal opportunities for the Muslims. Quaid-e-Azam had said that Muslims would not be treated as equal citizens in India and this is what is happening in India right now,” Imran said during the speech.

“If justice is not given to the weak then this only leads to an uprising. The people of East Pakistan were not given their rights and this was the main reason behind the creation of Bangladesh,” he added.

The comments have drawn flak from the actor. According to Indian media reports, Naseeruddin Shah has asked Imran Khan to focus on his own country.

“I think Mr Khan should be walking the talk in his own country instead of commenting on issues that don’t concern him. We have been a democracy for 70 years and we know how to look after ourselves,” Indian Express quoted Shah as saying.
