Jab Bana Nahin Saktey…

Toh Dikhatay Kyun Ho?

Sometimes I wonder, what’s the fuss all about? Is it about putting up a show every six months because that certainly isn’t the sole focus of a multibillion dollar industry internationally.

Fashion is about innovation, that innovation influencing trends and those trends defining a look for people. Fashion is about style and lifestyle. It isn’t just about making clothes, as every second bored housewife would have us believe. It’s also what every second channel is feeding us by portraying uninspiring, bored and uninformed men and women to sit on TV and talk fashion. No! They’re talking trash.

“We’ll make diverse capsule collections using different groups of similar prints,” LSA winner for Pret Kamiar Rokni said when he showcased this collection to the delight of critics in April. That was four months ago and I haven’t seen more than a few scanty pieces on racks here and there.

But then, I wonder, what are designers doing to change that. More than 60 collections were shown between the PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week and FPW3 earlier this year and not more than ten of them have seen the light of retail. Where is Fahad Hussayn’s highly acclaimed black and white collection? Where is Kamiar Rokni’s or Adnan Pardesy’s? I’ve been waiting endlessly for Sadaf Maleterre to put out the arty prints she designed.

Sania Maskatiya, Khaadi and FnkAsia are the sorted ones and those on the midway highway – like Shamaeel, Maheen Khan, Wardha Saleem, Sana Safinaz, Shehla Chatoor etc – are still working within limitations without a flagship store to their name. Where does one go for clothes if he/she does not have access to their exclusive ateliers? I think only designers with solo stores (and that doesn’t include those stocking at multi-retail boutiques) take the business seriously.
