Ranveer Singh’s new – and rather evil – version of Alauddin Khilji is all set to be honoured with a Dadasaheb Phalke Excellence Award for his role in Padmaavat.

The film, which since its controversial release has went on to garner a massive total of over INR 300 crore at the box office, has ushered in a new era of success for Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor which has been festooned with awards.

Recognizing his dark portrayal of the Central Asian Sultan in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s directorial, Ranveer was announced as a recipient of the coveted award for his ‘outstanding’ and ‘path-breaking’ act in the film.

“We take immense pleasure to inform you that you have been finalised for the Dadasaheb Phalke Excellence Award 2018 for the memorable role for the Padmaavat,” the committee wrote to the actor announcing his award.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India’s highest award in cinema and is presented annually at the National Film Awards ceremony by the Directorate of Film Festivals – an organisation set up by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The recipient is usually honoured for their ‘outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema’ and is selected by a committee consisting of eminent personalities from the Indian film industry.

As of 2016, the award comprises a Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) medallion, a shawl, and a cash prize of INR 1,000,000 (US$15,000).
