One of the most memorable moments from this year’s Lux Style Awards would have to be Reema’s cerebral performance. Her presence was one of the show’s best guarded secrets and no one knew she would be performing until she came on stage, floating like a very calm cloud. I met up with Reema two days after the show. Dressed to prefect coordination in a Khaadi lawn outfit, she spoke at length about everything from her marriage to her career, her son and her new role as cultural brand ambassador for Pakistan in Washington. She also spoke about Meera and what today’s average movie star lacked. But you’ll be able to read all that in the cover story in Instep on Sunday.

For my haute readers, here’s a treat – Reema’s full performance – followed by her secret to staying fit, mentally and physically.

“Firstly, I stay happy,” Reema said with that lovely smile. “I have a lot of contentment inside me. I feel that anxiety within you comes out on your face. Secondly, I have a peace of mind because of my husband; he is my support system. Thirdly, because I’m married to a cardiologist so I am inclined to take better care of my health. I walk thirty minutes everyday. I care for my hair. Most of all, I stay happy. I don’t get stressed.”

How long did it take to prepare for her performance, I asked her?

“Very less! Nigar jee is my witness,” she replied. “People took 10 to 15 days to learn their moves; I hardly took fours. I had gone for Umrah and I came back to Karachi to rehearse on the 16th, 17th and then 18th.”

Reema was a pro, evident in the fact that she was fluid in her movement, that too in high heels!

“Yes, I was wearing HSY and I performed in heels!” she laughed. “I still remember Kamiar (Rokni) and Nomi (Ansari) saying that Reema will take off her heels but that did not happen.”

I asked Reema how she felt performing with Mawra Hocane, one of the country’s brightest young stars? Did she have any advice for her?

“Mawra is just starting out and she’s such a humble and talented performer,” Reema replied graciously. “People have been comparing her to me, which is not fair. If you make me stand next to Babra jee, I will get really nervous too. I think Mawra did a great job and she looked so cute. I just had a problem with the outfit she wore but other than that I think it’s unfair to compare us. I think the first two songs that she performed, she was looking really nice. Even with me, it was her reflection on me that made me look so nice.”
