British actor of Pakistani descent Riz Ahmed is all set to play the lead in an upcoming film Mughal Mowgli. The actor has co-written the film with acclaimed documentary maker Bassam Tariq, who has won the non-fiction short film award for Ghosts of Sugar Land at the Sundance Film Festival.

According to an American entertainment portal Hollywood Reporter, Mughal Mowgli is a spiritual drama which follows the journey of a British-Pakistani rapper who, on the cusp of his first world tour, is struck down by an illness that threatens to derail his big break.

Ahmed will produce the film through his own Left Handed Films banner, alongside Pulse Films.

“I’m excited to be finally working on a feature with my friends at Pulse Films and my co-conspirator Bassam Tariq,” Ahmed said in a statement. “We are setting out to do something different, and do it in a bold way.”

“Collaborating with Bassam and Riz on Mughal Mowgli goes to the heart of our studio’s ethos: to tell human stories that capture moments of culture,” said CEO of Pulse Films Thomas Benski.

Riz Ahmed has won an Emmy Award in 2017 for his role in American TV series The Night Of. He has also starred in films like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Venom. The actor has plenty of first-hand experience about the music industry. He first emerged as Riz MC in the London music scene as a rap battle champion, going on to write and perform both as a solo artist and with his band, Swet Shop Boys.

His provocative solo release Post 9/11 Blues was banned before going viral, while the Swet Shop Boys album Cashmere landed the group major festival gigs including Coachella and Glastonbury.
