You may have seen and heard of her on Instagram but not many people know that Rozina Munib has been working in the fashion industry for the past 10 years and she will debut on the Fashion Pakistan Week Winter/Festive 2016 runway tonight. Her debut has been making headlines even before its showcase and the reason is Mukhtaran Mai; Rozina Munib will be bringing Mukhtaran Mai to fashion week and there’s more to her collection than meets the eye.

A little about her background: Rozina started out in Dubai, where she successfully runs a store today; as with most designers dealing with the South Asian community in the Middle East, Rozina too has been dabbling in glorious formal wear and contemporary prêt. Here in Pakistan her creations are available at all leading multi-label stores including Labels and Ensemble One in Karachi, Ensemble Lahore and she also stocks with various boutiques in the UK, USA and India. This is Rozina’s very first showcase at a local fashion week, having displayed once in London before.

Speaking to Something Haute about her upcoming collection, ‘Zindagi Kay Rung‘  Rozina shared her excitement and gave us some sneak peeks into her work. She will be working an extremely creative colour palette on French lamé fabric, giving her outfits an exquisite look. She has developed some innovative animations, which sounded very interesting, but she refused to give more detail!

However, the ‘zindagi kay rung’ (colours of life) Rozina is referring to go beyond the colour palette and fashion elements of her collection. In what has been the talk of the town for the past two days, Rozina Munib has dedicated her debut show at fashion week to Mukhtaran Mai and the designer says she wants to raise awareness for Mai’s welfare organisation.

Mukhtaran Mai is an inspiration for all women in Pakistan, Rozina shared with SH, adding that a very high percentage of Pakistani women went through some form of abuse in their lives and in the absence of education it was important to give them moral and social support, reassuring them that life does go on. This is the philosophy that has helped Mukhtaran survive and work for the welfare of struggling women in her district; not only did the rape victim speak out against her life-altering experience but she proved to be an example in the way in which she channeled her energy in a positive direction and built her life from a violent scratch. It’s important for the ‘victim’ to think of herself as a ‘survivor’ she reiterated. Rozina emphasized on the fact that she wishes to use the very visible fashion week platform to draw the peoples’ attention to a credible cause, a cause that needs attention and funding.

Amongst many relatively new designers showcasing at FPW, we hope Rozina is able to portray her strong concept with the care that it requires.
