Netflix has renewed Sacred Games for a second season after the series garnered critical acclaim worldwide following its release in July earlier this year. Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Vikram Chandra, the series features Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui as lead actors while it’s directed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane.

But excited fans might have to wait a little longer to watch fresh episodes. According to a report in Indian publication Bollywood Hungama, filming might be delayed as both Saif and Nawaz are currently busy with their respective projects.

“Nawazuddin Siddiqui is expected to Motichoor Chaknachoor in the next few days while he has already kicked off the shoot of the Rajinikanth starrer, his South debut Petta. As for Saif Ali Khan, he is yet to finish the shoot of Navdeep Singh’s Hunter and a shoot schedule of 15 days is yet to be complete. After that, the actor is supposedly starting another film,” the report states.

Hollywood Reporter, however, has reported that production will begin this fall.

Although the series has mostly earned praise, a section in India has criticised it for its controversial portrayal of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, resulting in a legal case which had prompted Saif to say that one could get killed for voicing their opinions, or speaking up against political leaders in India.

“If you date someone from the wrong caste, somebody will kill you in some parts of India. That’s just the way it is,” he had said in an interview to The Quint. “I don’t know how much you can criticise your government in India, somebody might kill you,” he added.

“It will be deeply frustrating if something happens to the show. If someone says you can’t air this or if Netflix is discontinued. Then that will be my turn to be outraged,” Saif said.
