Sania Mirza confirms a biopic on her is in the works

Be it propaganda-driven movies like The Accidental Prime Minister and Thackeray or a period film like Manikarnika which have been released so far, biopics are one of the most trending genres of films these days in Bollywood. Other than political figures and actors, stories of ambitious sports stars are the next big thing. After hearing about Ranveer Singh doing a biopic on Kapil Dev and Shraddha Kapoor depicting the life of Indian badminton star Saina Nehwal, gear up to witness the inspiring life of tennis star Sania Mirza on the big screen.

Produced by Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP films, Sania Mirza has confirmed the news. Indian daily Mumbai Mirror has quoted Sania as saying, “It is excitement combined with nervousness – a ‘butterfly in your stomach’ feeling – when you are about to let your life story out to the world.”

“It’s what I felt when my biography was written and I feel exactly the same when my journey is going to be presented on the big screen. I know it’s in good hands with an astute producer like Ronnie (Screwvala), who’s known for telling impactful stories. I am so excited to partner with him and his team at RSVP and honestly can’t wait for it to go on floors,” she added.

Indian daily Hindu has reported that Sania expects her input would be given due importance in the making of this film.

“It’s all going to be mutual understanding. I think that obviously my input is important. Because it’s my story. So, I will have to. We are literally in the very initial stages. So we just announced it. It will slowly get into the director, the writing, after that the casting. It’s still a bit long way to go,” Sania said.

Sania Mirza is the only Indian woman tennis player to win a Grand Slam title (in doubles). She is also the wife of Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik so it would be interesting to see how her marriage and love life will be incorporated in the film. It remains to be seen who is signed on to play the role of Sania and Shoaib.
