Two-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has been honoured by British human rights organisation, The People’s Portfolio, for “inspiring leadership, great courage and compassion for fellow human beings” through her documentaries.

Taking to Instagram, the filmmaker shared her recent achievement.

“I’m honored that The People’s Portfolio will present me with the 2021 Inspiring Leadership Award in a virtual program on December 8th,” she wrote.

“To amplify the stories and voices of women we need friends and partners that will help us advocate for change at all levels of society. The People’s Portfolio and its founder, Platon, are allies in the fight to change cultural norms that violate women’s fundamental human rights like domestic abuse, forced marriage, rape, so-called honor killings, and acid attacks around the world,” she further shared the details.

“I’m grateful for their partnership and I invite you to attend the virtual program on December 8th.”

The organisation is founded by Platon, a lauded British portrait and documentary photographer.

“Each year, we give an award for inspiring leadership, honoring a unique individual who has shown great courage and compassion for fellow human beings. I am proud to say this year’s award is going to Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the two-time Oscar-winning filmmaker from Pakistan, who directs extraordinary movies about women’s rights in her country,” shared Platon on Instagram.

“We are a beautiful family, bonded by common goals – promoting kindness, compassion, and respect for one another. Your donations will help us move mountains, to lift the voices of human rights leaders around the world and give them the resources and tools to amplify their essential stories in 2021—and beyond,” Platon further wrote.

Every year, the organisation hosts a fundraiser and the highlight of the event is a human rights defender being honoured for showing extraordinary leadership. The People’s Portfolio is holding its annual fundraiser this year on December 8 where Platon will be celebrating SOC and all her achievements. He will also be debuting a short film that he has made about her.

Past winners include Nobel Peace Laureate, Dr Denis Mukwege and Lonnie G. Bunch III, secretary of the Smithsonian Institution.

Saving Face (2012), A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness (2015), Song of Lahore (2015) are a few of the most notable works of the filmmaker. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is also directing the next and much-anticipated series in the Marvel franchise along with Meera Menon, Adil El Arbi, and Bilall Fallah.
