Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy Films have released the eighth animated short film from its famous Aagahi series, titled Acid Crimes.

Aagahi is a public service campaign which aims to educate women about their legal rights in Pakistan. The series was recently nominated at the 66th Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity for the Sustainable Development Goals Lions in the Gender Equality category.

The recently released short film — Acid Crimes — aims to inform viewers on what constitutes an acid crime and its various forms, specifically with the intent of harming another human being. The 3-minute video discusses punishments for convicted offenders, illegal usage and sale of acid and other corrosive chemicals. It also highlights how these are punishable crimes with laws in the Pakistani legal system, including a sentence of 14 years in jail, life imprisonment, one million rupee fine or all of the above.

Judging by the lack of awareness in our region, SOC Films found it equally significant to add information on safety measures that can be taken subsequently if involved in an incident. The film provides viewers with contact information for various helplines, women shelter homes, counseling services and legal support services, available for acid attack survivors.
