Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy Films have released the seventh animated short film from its famous Aagahi series, titled Forced Marriage – Zabardasti Ki Shaadi.
The Aagahi is a public service campaign which aims to educate women about their legal rights in Pakistan. The series was recently nominated at the 66th Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity for the Sustainable Development Goals Lions in the Gender Equality category.
According to a press statement issued by the SOC Films, “Pakistani law permits every girl freedom to choose who to marry. In this episode of the series, Forced Marriage [Zabardasti Ki Shaadi], the film describes what can be considered as a forced marriage and highlights existing laws that protect women and children from this practice.”
So far seven animated short films in Urdu have been released out of the 14 in Aagahi series. Helmed by two-time Academy Award winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, each episode explains and clarifyes the legislations which affect women; and gives an overview of how the legal provisions granted to them may be applied, such as; how to file an FIR, what does the law state on instances of domestic violence, divorce, cyber-crimes and inheritance and what is the procedure for reporting issues like these and who should be approached for help.
