The two-time Academy award winning director, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy released her animated film, titled Sitara: Let Girls Dream in September, and since then she has unveiled it at more than one platform. To add another feather in her cap, Sharmeen’s animated venture will soon be available to watch on Netflix as well.

Exploring the increasingly important issue of child marriages, the movie takes us on a journey through Lahore, where a 14-year-old girl, Pari, resides and has lofty dreams of becoming a pilot which are shattered when she is married off. Narrated through the perspective of Pari’s younger sister, Mehr, it is a silent film that reflects the struggle of girls in a suffocating society.

An intense story about the burdens of a family and the impact of a culture where girls are still fighting to fully realize their dreams, Sitara has been penned entirely by Sharmeen herself. “For me, Sitara is more than a film, it is a movement that we want to start across the world, that encourages parents to invest in their girls’ dreams, encouraging them to free their girls from the burdens of early marriage,” said Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

Sitara has been produced under the banner of Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s animation company — Waadi Animations — in association with Vice Studios and Gucci’s Chime For Change.

The animated film will release on the streaming platform in 2020.
