Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy is not new to international awards; in fact the filmmaker has become the pride of our country and has been bringing in much-coveted Oscars and Emmys since 2007. Just last year her documentary A girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness won the Academy Award for Best Documentary, in the short subjects category, while previously her documentary Saving Face has been awarded two prestigious Emmy Awards for Best Documentary and Outstanding Editing.

“There is no price for hope,” says Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy at the launch of R5 Foundation

This year A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness has bagged three nominations at the 38th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards for Best Documentary, Outstanding Short Documentary and Outstanding Music and Sound. The talented filmmaker has previously won an Emmy for her documentary Children of Taliban and two Emmys for Saving Face.

Sharmeen’s films have always highlighted important issues and brought light to the harsh reality of individuals in our society face, which are often ignored. Similarly, A Girl in the River dealt with the heinous subject of honour killings, and told the story of a nineteen-year-old girl, who survives an honour killing attempt by her father and uncle.

Now with three Emmy nominations, hopes are running high and rarely have we been let down by the filmmaker! Let’s bring home the Emmys again!
