Exclusive peak: Sana Safinaz pret look for SS 2012

Neha models the Sana Safinaz SS 2012 new look: short and streamlined for the day! This was the first shoot I have ever coordinated in my fourteen year career, that too for a magazine I have never written for before. You'll have to wait to look at results of the full production (and it was nothing less) but I can promise that these will be images you have never seen before. This picture, blogged of course with Sana and Safinaz's consent, is a sneak peak into what their label will be trend-setting as the pret look for spring/summer 2012. Enjoy!...

Meeting Shahrukh Khan

SRK twenty minutes after the first time I met him at couture week in Mumbai I met Shahrukh Khan last year at the HDIL Couture Week for the very first time. It was the last day and the whole of Bollywood was in Bombay to support fashion's great walk. While I had seen SRK on the catwalk with Gauri a year earlier (for Karan Johar and Varun Bahl's menswear show), he came and left and it was impossible to access him. Luckily, he was sitting in the front row the next year, again for Karan Johar's show. Followers will remember the show that featured Amitabh Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan; they pulled SRK up as well and they did...

HDIL India Couture Week 2009, in brief

A svelte Sridevi is celebrity model for jewelry designer Queenie. Exciting finale acts, it must be said, are vital for couture shows. Seen here is a completely made-over Sridevi walking for her friend and jewelry designer Queenie Singh. Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan for Manish Malhotra. I needn't say more. Celebrities are a vital part of any fashion week. I met dozens at ICW; seen ahead are Hrithik Roshan, Imran Khan, Neha Dhupia. Kareena walked the finale for Manish Malhotra though Saif and Kareena were out of bounds for conversation with anyone but Karan Johar. KJo, btw, hosts ‘Kouture with Karan’ especially for NDTV at ICW. Ranbir Kapoor, walking the ramp another day for...

Nabila documents the changes in her life

After months at the grind - and I must admit that Nabila, Zain (Mustafa, Project Manager) and Saima (Zaidi, Graphic Designer) were being ground more than anyone else - Nabila launched her L"oreal sponsored book at the Commune Artist's Colony where she keeps her office. Needless to say, it was an effortlessly elegant affair with everyone in presence to laud her commitment to excellence for more than two decades. It was an honour to be part of this book, which I texted and edited for Nabila. This means that I wrote as she spoke and I made sure the script would be presented with as much perfection as her work. Someone asked me at the launch whether it was a difficult...

When in Mumbai, do as Bollywood!

(Dawn, October 31 2010) Compact and delightfully well organized, the HDIL India Couture Week would have been the ideal model for Pakistan’s fashion weeks to begin with. The Grand Hyatt in Santacruz Mumbai, where HDIL India Couture Week is hosted every year, started coming alive a day before the shows were to commence. Lobbies were taken over by leggy models that charmed the otherwise corporate corridors while a flurry of overanxious organizers fluttered around like busy bees. Fashionistas clicked around in ridiculously high heels (and just as high skirts) and the cafes crawled with the fast and fashionable pecking at bits of lettuce and fresh fruit. From luxury cars glistening outside (meaning that a Bollywood star had arrived) to bell-boys wheeling clothes...

Why do women move in herds when it comes to style?

Published in Instep, The News on March 2, 2010 Let’s face it: as women in Pakistan, most of us are not really encouraged to take individual decisions in our lives. We live in the protective shadow of either our parents or our husbands and those of us who manage to break away (by means of a foreign education perhaps) are eventually considered social outcasts or worse, rebels. There’s hope for us if we’re effectively lured back into the roost (the most desirable lasso being a suitable boy) but if we blow the candles on our twenty fifth birthday cake in a bachelorette pad in London, as our global salt and pepper of friends pop a cork with us, we’re mentally crossed...
