Bunto Kazmi’s Magical Karachi Skyline

It was nothing short of a museum piece. When I heard of the tapestry that Bunto Apa (as she is lovingly and respectfully called) had created, I dropped all prior engagements and trekked across to Muhammad Ali Society, where she resides. Anyone who's visited Bunto Kazmi's exotic atelier will vouch for its intricate splendour; today it looked extra special as everyone there was standing around this 7 foot long tapestry and just admiring it in silence. Swarovski Opens in Pakistan

With a premium flagship store on Zamzama, the crystal giant brings a sparkling galaxy of options to local designers  Luminous and dazzling, it would be impossible to miss the sparkle of the first official Swarovski outlet that opened on Zamzama this week. A reception of costume jewellery that would convert the most die-hard gold loyalist and an upper storey of crystals, mesh, beads and everything that a couturier’s treasure trove should be brimming with. Flashy and fashionable, the inauguration of the store pulled in the right crowd, from Bunto Kazmi, Safinaz Muneer, Rehana Saigol, Maheen Khan and Faiza Samee to Naushaba Brohi and Yousuf Bashir Mirza, all willing buyers in this bazaar of bling. Swarovski, a name that needs no introduction except...

Fashion at Sindh Festival ups the style ante!

It is a very big bubble. What else can I call the existence and execution of the grand Sindh Festival, celebrating our culture while the governments talks with the TTP to bring peace to the turbulent northern Pakistan. But it's a beautiful bubble, at least the Fashion Festival (first part of the festival that I have attended) was absolutely glorious. From the organic ambience of the Hindu Gymkhana, the stellar style and creativity of the show, the tasteful choreography to the kaleidoscopic burst of fireworks at the very end, the two hour show did not disappoint for even a second. The elements came together, proving that a combination of all the right details can make or break a show. At this...

Pakistan’s Retail Therapy

This is the unedited version of the story that appeared in Hindustan Times on April 29, 2013. You can read the published version here http://www.hindustantimes.com/ViewsEditorialSectionPage/ColumnsOthers/Pakistan-s-retail-therapy/Article1-1052330.aspx The first Sana Safinaz Store at Dolmen City Mall, Karachi has been drawing in crowds. Like high-end boutiques anywhere in the world, only 15 ladies are allowed in at a time. Photo courtesy Salima Feerasta It’s been little over a decade since an organized fashion industry emerged in Pakistan, five years since the first fashion week unrolled it’s catwalks to buyers and the media. The industry is barely adolescent but fashion has snowballed beyond imagination despite the odds, which are many. You would think that establishing a fashion industry in Pakistan would be as difficult...
