PLBW Daily Diary: Day Three

The bird's nest braid sets the stage for braids as style for the season and Mohsin Ali's impressive capsule collection brings him back in the game. Ideally, Day Three of the PFDC L’Oreal Paris Bridal Week should have started with Nickie Nina and ended with Khadija Shah’s Elan, which was the strongest of the evening. Layla Chatoor, who had come to make a debut/comeback from Karachi, fell in between, her colour palette subtle and beautiful but her lack of confidence and runway experience showing to her disadvantage. It would be fair to say that the evening started on its strongest note and then gradually slipped into monotonous tedium of seeing one generic bridal after the other. [caption id="attachment_2556"...

PFDC L’Oreal Paris Bridal Week 2012 lineup: first look

It hasn’t been made official yet but of course, a journalist can hardly be expected to wait for an official announcement. None of this has been confirmed by the Pakistan Fashion Design Council or Lotus (the official publicist for PLBW) but I have been able to put together an informal lineup of designers and I’m confident that it’s quite accurate, especially with the designers that I’ve spoken to. This is what (or rather who) you can expect to see at the second annual PFDC L’Oreal Paris Bridal Week… Names to look forward to: Fahad Hussayn, PLBW 2011 Fahad Hussayn: This will be Fahad’s second showing at the PLBW. He showed a magnificent Kashmir inspired collection last time and got raving...

Mahira sparks up Labels

Multi-label boutique Labels collaborated with five of its high value designers to execute this shoot for the paramount 500th issue of Sunday magazine. Quite an achievement that Sunday - which under the shadow of STS had placed a ban on Labels - should award this anniversary issue to Zahir. But then Sheherbano Taseer is a breed apart and a gene pool above. She makes Pakistan proud, unlike her step sister. Anyway, back to fashion and this fabulous shoot. Planned at the picturesque Port Grande, the savvy new waterside food street in Karachi that would remind one of Singapore's Clark Quay if it could whip up a club scene, the shoot was coordinated and styled by Maha Burney and her artistic husband...

Khadijah Shah does bridals with elan

Khadijah Shah is one of the most popular bridal designers in Lahore, for good reason. Her office has stopped taking orders for bridals that require delivery before March. That means the next five months are locked, blocked and booked for Khadijah Shah who has her hands full and therefore no time to think of fashion shows. She says it's unlikely she'll be showing at PFDC's inaugural bridal week (being organized in collaboration with beauty giants L'Oreal) this December. But that won't cause a dent in her business, that is obviously flourishing with or without extra publicity. Shah's work speaks for itself, her forte being the classic and traditional line she sketches. This recent image from her bridal atelier...

Fashion in full force, Doo-buy!

Doo-buy. Or Dubai. The place reeks of retail and driving along the large pathways that line this concrete jungle, you'd think there were no inhabitants humans in this place. Only looming buildings, speeding cars and lights. It's only when you step into the malls that you see the hustle bustle of life. Aaah, the smell of retail, and it's not just therapy when you're shopping. Even when you're window shopping, it's retail aromatherapy! So obviously, Doo-buy is the best place for fashion brands to flourish. Especially Pakistani fashion brands that attract South Asian socialites like bees to honey. Indeed, that is what one witnessed when Labels opened at Studio 8 on the lush Jumeirah strip. Studio 8 that day was a...
