7 fashion brands for Ramzan

It’s the time of the year when women easily accept 30 days of abstinence from food and water but direct their guilty pleasure from food to fashion! They indulge (most eagerly) into fresh off the rack, graphically patterned and vibrant outfits, not that we're complaining. There’s an instantaneous need for a spiritual cleansing in Ramzan, but also one of a different kind, and what may that be, than to indulge in some hard-core retail therapy? As Eid approaches, the markets are ready to get swarmed and as far as our trend report goes, ready-to-wear is topping the charts! While R2W is available a dime a dozen and there are umpteen options to choose from, here are our top high street picks from retailers...

Telenor Fashion Pakistan Week S/S2015: Day One

Oomph. Zing. The Wow Factor.   All that was missing in the collections shown at Day 1 of the Telenor Fashion Pakistan Week SS2015 but let’s not start on a negative note. There were positives of the evening that cannot be ignored.   How absolutely cool it was for fashion week to begin and end at a decent hour. At 10pm Mariam, Mehreen (my colleagues at Instep) and I were seated at the Noodle House, filing the daily story for Instep, which will be in print tomorrow morning. The fabulous timing made it possible for us to at least mention every collection and grab a meal after the show too. So proud of the council, Latitude and whoever it took to ensure this punctuality....

Fashion at Sindh Festival ups the style ante!

It is a very big bubble. What else can I call the existence and execution of the grand Sindh Festival, celebrating our culture while the governments talks with the TTP to bring peace to the turbulent northern Pakistan. But it's a beautiful bubble, at least the Fashion Festival (first part of the festival that I have attended) was absolutely glorious. From the organic ambience of the Hindu Gymkhana, the stellar style and creativity of the show, the tasteful choreography to the kaleidoscopic burst of fireworks at the very end, the two hour show did not disappoint for even a second. The elements came together, proving that a combination of all the right details can make or break a show. At this...

The TDAP Trip

I've never had the motivation to attend a TDAP event before, not just because it was always held at the other side of the city at the Expo Centre, but also because the former Director was allegedly/ infamously corrupt (now in jail) and because TDAP infamously put up shoddy WC and mango stalls in their exports exhibition. Let's just say I had my reasons. This year the fashion shows, at least, were different and showed promise. I have no idea what and how much the newly appointed Secretary, Rabiya Javeri can change but someone with her background and reputation does suddenly bring class and respect to an event. Which is basically why so many credible labels agreed to show. The line...

Fashion weeks lead to fashion retail

Sania Maskatiya and Umair Tabani, the brain behind the brand. Designers should have the space to create while someone else worries about the business and Sania's lucky to have that in her brother. How many times have I heard the question, “What do fashion weeks achieve?” as most people feel it’s an opportunity for certain designers to claim the spotlight before they disappear into the woodwork for the next six months. People feel that way because while runway images may make for ample media fodder (and we do love churning pictures out on different angles for the next six months) clothes shown on the runway were seldom seen in stores. I said 'were' because that holds true...
