Exclusive! BTS at Ho Mann Jahaan rehearsals

'Shakar Wandaan Re' dubsmashes are all the rage these days but we've been holding on to this exclusive footage of the Ho Mann Jahan's leading trio - Mahira Khan, Shehryar Munawwar and Adeel Husain - since summer when we went behind the scenes at Asim Raza's studio in Karachi and caught the action, live. We were requested not to post this footage until the first look of the song was revealed - which it has been done now - and now we have the director's blessings to go ahead with giving our readers a little something special.   So, what was it like to be present at the rehearsals? It was like being in the midst of a hustling and bustling bazaar,...

FPW pulls out the BIG GUNS on Day 3

…Some of Pakistan’s best bridal couturiers play to their strengths   By Aamna Haider Isani   Day 3 featured some very big names in Pakistani fashion – Umar Sayeed, Faraz Manan and last but not least, Nilofer Shahid. And all three of them pelted out some fabulous wedding wear and artistic couture. An unexpected surprise was Nauman Arfeen, whose simple, rustic collection provided a much-needed dose of menswear that didn’t look like something out of a Tim Burton movie. Other than the top names, Zaheer Abbas put out a neat but forgettable show and Delphi by Nida Tapal showcased some lovely examples of how crochet can be incorporated into formal wear; a jarring palette let the collection down. Zainab Chottani unraveled a colourful collection...

Mahira turns bad-ass for Pepe

Mahira Khan’s pretty, girl-next-door image completely turned on its heels this week when the first few images of Pepe Jeans’ new campaign hit the cyber waves. Out flew Khirad and Saba and in came this almost bad-ass, pouting lass of a woman who didn’t know how to smile. All this denim, leather, boots and nonchalance brought out the babe and wow! This smoldering look was a welcome relief to Mahira’s usual, wholesome gorgeousness. We love her always, forever but we were swayed by this new look more than ever before.   So we called Nabila, who gave her the look, and asked how our readers could recreate it if they wanted to … which we’re sure they do!     HAIR Mahira’s hair had been cut...

5 (Manto) minutes with Mahira Khan

mahira khan
Something Haute catches a few minutes with Mahira Khan on what she expects from the latest sensation, Manto.   SH: Manto is very different from your average feature film. What are your hopes from the film?   Mahira Khan: Okay, let me just digress. I saw Shah and I was like, wow man. When someone likes what the story is, or believes in it, or has a lot of heart in it, it's amazing that you see it as an audience, I think. That's what Shah is. You forget that it's a low budget film and that it may not be as beautiful as the others; you see heart and you feel it on the screen. I hope that even though Manto is technically great...

Ho Mann Jahan’s release postponed

Asim Raza’s eagerly anticipated feature film, starring Mahira Khan, Shehryar Munawar and Adeel Hussain in lead roles, will now hit cinemas after Moharram. Projected as an Eid-ul-Azha release in a star-studded press conference earlier this year, Ho Mann Jahan will now make it to cinemas by the end of November, at the earliest. Producer/Director Asim Raza explains his reasons…       Why has the release of Ho Mann Jahan been postponed?     Asim Raza:Jawani Phir Nahi Aani is releasing on Eid-ul-Azha and it’s a big Pakistani film that we don’t want to go head to head with. We’d happily go up against any Indian film but I feel there needs to be harmony within the Pakistani film industry. We’ll wait for Moharram to pass by peacefully...

Mahira as man, madari or monkey?

We’ve seen and loved her as Khirad (Humsafar), Falak (Shehr-e-Zaat), Shano (Sadqay Tumhare) and of course, more recently as Saba in Bin Roye. Mahira Khan’s next appearance is not likely to be as conventional or feminine. In fact, it is quite simply unorthodox as she plays monkey, man and madari in Madari, one of Saadat Hassan Manto’s short stories featured as part of the upcoming Manto the Film. Madari is one of Manto’s most thought provoking stories, which confronts Darwin’s theory of evolution.     “Of course it challenged me,” Mahira Khan spoke to me on the sets of Subh Ki Kahani, a new morning show launched on the channel Geo Kahani yesterday. Mahira and Sarmad Khoosat came in as the show’s very...

Catching Up with Mahira Khan

The verdict is in and in the words of Saqib Malik, “Bin Mahira there is no Bin Roye.”   Anyone making an educated guess would have predicted the overwhelming response Mahira Khan was about to receive in the first feature film marking her debut in lead role. Yes, her big screen debut was Bol in 2011 but hers was a small role back then; it was a role that got overshadowed by Khirad in Humsafar and how!   It would be fair to say that Mahira Khan is no longer Humsafar’s tragic heroine Khirad. Mahira Khan is no longer television’s darling. Mahira is now a film star!   Catching her right before she set out for her international premieres, as she stopped to catch her breath...

A Man for All Reasons

Humayun Saeed talks about work, women, the scandals that follow him and his upcoming films that will jolt him out of the comfort zone of romantic hero, as seen in Bin Roye.   Humayun Saeed’s house shares an insight to the star he is; at least his den – in the basement of his home in a posh Karachi locale – does just that. You walk down to be welcomed by a wall decorated with awards; that’s a mantle that exhibits his successes as an actor. One room boasts a massive billiards table; it’s a room lined with articles, shoots and features that have celebrated his existence over the years. His lounge, another palatial space decorated in shades of wood with the...
