Ho Mann Jahaan: reviving an Ankahi magic

How exactly are Mahira Khan, Sheheryar Munawar, Adeel Hussain, Sonya Jehan, Fawad Khan, Hamza Ali Abbasi, Atif Aslam, Asrar, Zeb Bangash and many more coming together for Ho Mann Jahaan?   The Zen, slate grey exterior of Asim Raza’s studio on Ittehad belies the effervescence that is bubbling up inside. Rising behind a jigsaw of cars in the porch and stacks of an endless supply of Coca Cola is the sound of music. An upbeat, faster version of Asrar’s ‘Shakar Wandaan Re’ can be heard and if you manage to see through the troupe of dancers you’ll catch a glimpse of Mahira Khan, Sheheryar Munawer and Adeel Hussain practicing their moves for the song, which has to be shot a couple of...

From crystal meth to crystals

Rizwanullah recalls his perilous journey as he settles down to a crystalline new life at Fifth Element, the official distribution partner for Swarovski in Pakistan.    “I started taking all these chemicals: heroin, LSD, hash, weed, ecstasy, ice, crystal meth…you name it. I thought I could stop whenever I wanted to but I was wrong. My life had started slipping away.”   Syed Mohammad Rizwanullah. It’s hardly the kind of name you associate with a fashion creature but that’s what he’s always been. The ten-inch Mohawk, spiked at the edges, and lace-up boots that said enfant terrible from the minute you set eyes on them. Give him a mirror and you’d see him preening; he was the proverbial peacock who reveled in the spotlight....

Hum TV introduces Bin Roye…finally!

The trailer to this film has released, ro ro kar and it comes with a ‘Releasing Soon’ promise, still no confirmed or even estimated date. Bin Roye, secretly dubbed as a Titanic on the sets – because of its long delays – finally emerged and gave Mahira Khan fans something to look forward to. Here’s what my first impression is:   Bin Roye is going to struggle to look like a feature film; it’s cast and crew is too close to television and that shows in the frames. I’m not a technical person at all but I can see that Bin Roye borders on tele-film, which may be a problem. That may also be because the makers plan to release it in drama format...

We saw the Ho Mann Jahaan teaser and Wow!

It isn’t the simplest film title to enunciate, understand or remember but Ho Mann Jahan, as director/producer Asim Raza said in the film’s introductory press conference tonight, has double meaning. It refers to a place where your heart is and it also refers to the heart as the universe, the ‘jahaan‘.     Held around the set of Ho Mann Jahan at Frere Hall, where a mehndi dance sequence has been filming these past few days, did Asim Raza host his press conference introducing the film and its cast to the media while revealing a teaser from the film. And how cool did the teaser look! I did an exclsuive interview with Asim last week, which was published inInstep this Sunday, so had most of the information...

The Unusual, Shining Star

Bin Roye and Bollywood. Marriage and the men in her life. Sex appeal and Sadqay Tumhare. Is there anything else you need to know about Mahira Khan? She talks about it all in her first interview in years.  Mahira is always in a hurry. And she’s in a characteristic state of rush as she walks in for this interview, radiant in a white cotton kurta, gorgeous in an unaware state of unkempt attraction. It’s the look of a woman who has too much to do, with little time to do anything more than pull back her hair and leave the house with nothing fancier than a washed face. But what a face it is! Mahira is a head-turner, evoking both envy...

Veet Celebrates Beauty, but keeps it skin deep

The evening's hosts, Aamina Sheikh and Azfar Rehman, who looked better than their scripts sounded. Aamina Sheikh, Mehwish Hayat, Humaima Malik, Cyra Yousuf, Amna Ilyas, Saima Azhar, Mahnoor Baloch and several other fashion and television starlets were flaunted at the seventh Veet Celebration of Beauty held at the Expo Centre in Karachi last night. Needless to say, the event was quite easy on the eyes. Mahwish Hayat opened the VINTAGE segment with a performance set to an adaptation of Nur Jehan's 'Mehki Fizain'. The look and feel of the event was elegant and impressive. The lounge, upon entrance, had a chic pink ambience and a clean, uncluttered red carpet. Even the stage was aesthetically appealing...

Feeha Jamshed launches an independent label

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0Zb3OdwQf0&feature=youtu.be] In a show that was more about emotions than anything else, Feeha Jamshed launched her own label at Showcase 2012. The collection retained her signature contemporary silhouettes though they were slightly more western than the designs she creates for awami brand Teejays. That said, she kept her aesthetic intact as she paid tribute to her sister Minnaal who passed away in Paris last year. My heart went out to Rabia Butt too, who lost her mother last year and also couldn't hold back the tears. A very sentimental show....

Mahira sparks up Labels

Multi-label boutique Labels collaborated with five of its high value designers to execute this shoot for the paramount 500th issue of Sunday magazine. Quite an achievement that Sunday - which under the shadow of STS had placed a ban on Labels - should award this anniversary issue to Zahir. But then Sheherbano Taseer is a breed apart and a gene pool above. She makes Pakistan proud, unlike her step sister. Anyway, back to fashion and this fabulous shoot. Planned at the picturesque Port Grande, the savvy new waterside food street in Karachi that would remind one of Singapore's Clark Quay if it could whip up a club scene, the shoot was coordinated and styled by Maha Burney and her artistic husband...
