Can Coke Studio surprise us anymore?

Eight seasons in, can Coke Studio surprise us anymore? That's a question that can arise in one's mind when a show or series has been around for this long; 8 years and 8 seasons in Coke Studio's case. Coke Studio has been around for quite some time and thankfully, it has been doing a good job, discounting a few glitches here and there. However, it has been criticised for being repetitive or redundant, with many fans claiming that it was losing its steam by not thinking out of the box. But then a question begs to be asked: does Coke Studio even need to change things? The people at Coke Studio obviously did think that it was time to shake things...

At the trailer launch of Actor In Law

"I think I was very confident at the trailer launch of Na Maloom Afraad but now I'm just super conscious!" exclaimed Nabeel Qureshi, director of the film, as he opened the press conference. Qureshi, along with the cast and crew of Actor in Law, was gathered to release the trailer of FilmWala’s second venture exactly two years after Na Maloom Afraad. The stage was set and posters were up announcing the three lead-cast of the upcoming film Actor in Law, starring Fahad Mustafa, Mehwish Hayat and Indian veteran actor, Om Puri. "This is the first time an Indian actor has flown in to play a part in a Pakistan production," Nina, marketing head of Entertainment URDU 1 and representative of Urdu 1 pictures,...

A Haute Look at Actor in Law

Upcoming film Actor in Law is buzzing for several reasons. First, it's been made by the same team that gave us the uber-entertaining Na Maloom Afraad. Secondly, it has a stellar cast including Fahad Mustafa and Mehwish Hayat in lead roles and the veteran Om Puri in the role of sarpanch. I'm not a fan of Fahad Mustafa but he can act and though Mehwish Hayat tends to go overboard she does look gorgeous and does her job more than adequately. Om Puri brings his comic timing and experience to the table. He's the lawyer and his son, Shan Mirza, apparently is the son who only acts as if he's one. The trailer, under three minutes long, taps into the troubles and trials...

Dillagi: Episode 9

Dillagi continues to engage with its localized take on Beauty and the Beast. Women find the character of Mohid (Humayoun Saeed) completely swoon-worthy for his silent, brooding and macho exterior and mushy heart (an irresistible combination) and I have to say that Mehwish Hayat does full justice to her character, Anmol, the gorgeous woman with an icy block of steel for a heart. But it’s Saba Hamid who completely overtakes everyone whenever she comes on screen. It’s refreshing to see the portrayal of such a strong woman, one who commands her super-machismo of a son and actually has a backbone and a sense of power as well as values. The fact that her daughter is a weakling is also natural;...

The HUM Awards 2016

The set up was spectacular.   10:30pm. We were very, very late in getting to the Expo Centre last night, where the 4th Servis Hum Awards were being held. The traffic outside the venue was crippling and it took us over an hour to cover a few yards of road: our honest excuse. By the time we got inside everyone had already been seated and announcements were being made for people to take their seats so the show could begin. It was 11pm.   I managed to venture out backstage where I bumped into a beautiful Reema who had swapped her Asim Jofa outfit for her favourite, HSY. Hassan of course was his usual jovial and happy self. He’s got great energy. Sarmad Khoosat,...

The lost art of dance in Pakistani cinema

Recently held in Alliance Française by the same name, 'The lost art of dance in Pakistani cinema' was an eye opening journey for any cinema-lover/media student/film critic. The low attendance of anyone from the media industry, however, was shocking. You would think that the people so interested in producing films and 'preserving/reviving cinema' would have attended an event like this. Sadly, there were barely any people from our mainstream film industry present. Guddu Khan, moments before breaking into a chorus of 'Thank yous' to all the people who came to see his archive   What was this event? It was an exhibition held by Guddu Khan, one of the few people who have created an impressive archive for Pakistani cinema, ranging from original film...

Mehwish Hayat: What does the ‘cat’ say?

From TV, theatre, film to music, Mehwish Hayat has done it all and yet it’s ‘Billi’ that propelled her to cinematic stardom. She has signed up for her first drama serial in two years and is ready to release her first pop single anytime. Here's what makes the starlet tick…     You may remember her as the very pretty Priya from Shah Sharabeel’s Bombay Dreams or those whose hearts lie in serious theatre may remember her in Javed Siddiqui’s Aapki Soniya, a sequel to the iconic Tumhari Amrita in which she appeared opposite Sajid Hasan. Mehwish Hayat may have made an impression in Manjali, a TV serial that established her as a serious actress but it was the foot-tapping ‘Billi’ in Na Maloom Afraad...

Veet Celebrates Beauty, but keeps it skin deep

The evening's hosts, Aamina Sheikh and Azfar Rehman, who looked better than their scripts sounded. Aamina Sheikh, Mehwish Hayat, Humaima Malik, Cyra Yousuf, Amna Ilyas, Saima Azhar, Mahnoor Baloch and several other fashion and television starlets were flaunted at the seventh Veet Celebration of Beauty held at the Expo Centre in Karachi last night. Needless to say, the event was quite easy on the eyes. Mahwish Hayat opened the VINTAGE segment with a performance set to an adaptation of Nur Jehan's 'Mehki Fizain'. The look and feel of the event was elegant and impressive. The lounge, upon entrance, had a chic pink ambience and a clean, uncluttered red carpet. Even the stage was aesthetically appealing...
