All of us were eagerly waiting for the teasers of Sohai Ali Abro’s next venture – Surkh Chandni — which portrays the riveting journey of an acid attack survivor. The wait is over as the first two teasers have been released on Wednesday and the gripping story has given us goosebumps.

Directed by Shahid Shafaat and produced by Samina Humayun Saeed and Sana Shahnawaz of Next Level Entertainment;  the drama features Sohai Ali Abro and Osman Khalid Butt in lead roles alongside Asad Siddiqui, Mansha Pasha, Hassan Ahmed, Rashid Farooqui and Lubna Aslam. The first teaser shows a simple girl Aida (Sohai) with her fiancé Amaan (Osman), the two of whom are head over heels in love with each other. Aida’s life then takes a 180 degree turn when she is subjected to a heinous acid attack on her wedding day.

The second teaser depicts the ruthless practice of victim blaming in our society where the survivors are treated as outcasts. Aida’s brother and sister-in-law (played by Hassan Ahmed and Mansha Pasha respectively) blame her for the attack. She is subjected to humiliation as if her burns are contagious and her brother accuses her of having an affair that landed her in trouble. But all this while, Osman’s character stands by her as a pillar of strength.

Surkh Chandni

Talking exclusively to Something Haute, Osman Khalid Butt revealed that it was quite a challenge to act in Surkh Chandni.

“This has been the most emotionally devastating play that I’ve ever done in my career. All of us really invested while working on it because we didn’t want to do any disservice to the grave subject. We have tried to tell a very authentic story which poses some hard-hitting questions like how is it so easy to procure acid despite that bills have been passed for its control. The drama really tackles not just the physical ramifications of the heinous crime but also the psychological and emotional ramifications of the brutal act,” Osman said.

Written by Asma Nabeel, Surkh Chandni will air on ARY Digital soon. Watch the teasers and let us know what you think:
