Bilal Lashari’s The Legend of Maula Jatt (TLMJ) is the first film from the subcontinent to get a theatrical release in China on the same day of its release worldwide. The movie is scheduled to hit the theaters on Eidul Fitr next year.

TLMJ’s China release, that too simultaneously, is no mean feat considering China’s limited quota of foreign films allowed to be screened each year. Also, the small number of films which are selected for screening in China have to go through meticulous scrutiny by the Chinese regulatory authorities. These foreign films are dubbed in Mandarin and have a standardized screen time.

Only a handful of big studio-backed projects from Hollywood such as Spider Man 2, Captain America and X Men have been able to achieve such mainstream release in China. The most commercially successful Bollywood films — Dangal, Secret Superstar, Hindi Medium and Bahubali — were all released in China at least months or a year later after they were released in India and elsewhere.

TLMJ boasts of a stellar cast including Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan, Hamza Ali Abbasi and Humaima Malick in key roles. The much-hyped film is touted to be “Pakistan’s most elaborate and expensive film” made to date.
