Shah Rukh Khan’s next production, Bard of Blood is a Netflix web series starring Emraan Hashmi in the lead. The spy thriller has become the talk of the town, but not for good reasons.

The trailer of the spy thriller depicts the story of an excommunicated RAW agent, Kabir Anand (Emraan Hashmi) along with an analyst, Isha Sengupta (Sobhita Dhulipala of Made in Heaven fame), and a sleeper agent, Veer Singh (Vineet Kumar Singh), who take on a covert mission in Balochistan (Pakistan) after four Indian spies are captured.

Soon after the trailer of the series was released in August, many expressed disapproval about his anti-Pakistan narrative. DG ISPR, Asif Ghafoor also took to Twitter to criticize Shah Rukh Khan for presenting Pakistan in a negative light.

“Stay in Bollywood syndrome Shah Rukh Khan. For reality see RAW Spy Kulbhushan Jadev, Wing Comd Abhinandan and the state of Feb 27, 2019,” he wrote.

In a recent interview with India Today, Emraan Hashmi responded to DG ISPR’s tweet saying, “This way, you don’t end up making any film because whenever you have content that has even remotely anything associated with anything political related to these two countries (India and Pakistan), emotions do run high.”

“You have to bear the brunt in this and social media is full of this. I think that one tweet (Asif Ghafoor’s) led to other people spewing hate,” the actor added.

Emraan further explained that Bard of Blood is based on Bilal Siddiqui’s book, which was published in 2014.

“But to put things to rest, there is no propaganda here. This [Bard of Blood] is based on a book that is written by a [then-] 20-year-old kid back in 2014. The political climate at that point of time was very different. There is no agenda to it. Our show is based on that book and that’s that. You can’t please everyone. You make a show of this nature, which has some kind of political relevance, and it going to snowball and you will have people talking. Everyone has an opinion these days,” Emraan said.

Bard of Blood will be showcased as a seven-episode series for Netflix subscribers around the world. The series will stream from September 27, 2019.
